At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 75 individuals, of which about 35 are teachers and scientists, 25 PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC) , where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science.

Project description
The project Amospheric rivers and the onset of Arctic melt - ARTofMELT investigates so-called Amospheric Rivers – distinct episodes with an inflow of warm and often moist air  – on the energy budget of the surface over Arctic sea ice. We are especially interested in if – and how – these influnce the timing of the annual start of the surface melt.

ARTofMELT is centered around a research expedition to the central Arctic Ocean on the Swedish icebreaker Oden in May and June 2023, organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. On this expedition we will, together with an international team of scientists, conduct detailed observations of the atmosphere, sea ice and upper ocean. The position is funded by the Swedish Research Council.

Main responsibilities
Initial tasks include to prepare for and participate in the ARTofMELT expedition on the icebreaker Oden. Preparation can include both theoretical work, such as developing observation strategy analyzing observations and modeling data for climatological conditions, and practical preparations in installing or deploying instrument platforms for the expedition on the icebreaker Oden.

After the expedition, data from a large number of sources needs quality control, preparations into datasets and open publication of data. The scientific analysis of the data will start in parallel, in collaboration with the international teams of scientists. This may include both direct analysis and synthesis of data and numerical modeling.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

The doctoral degree must be in meteorology, oceanography, climate science, or in a related field.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills within the area of the project. Experience in working with inflows of warm and moist air in the Arctic as well as previous participationin earlier expeditions to the Arctic is considered as specially meritorious.

An excellent command of written and spoken English is required.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 1 February 2023 or later as per agreement.
