The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in order to improve health and healthcare in the community. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are two of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders, and they are present in 15-20% of the population in Western countries. The mechanisms explaining the symptoms are not fully understood, and the importance of different food items is unclear. The Neurogastroenterology research group at the department of molecular and clinical medicine has a long-standing experience in performing successful translational research focusing on the complex pathophysiology and symptom patterns in functional gastrointestinal disorders, including research focusing on the role of food.

Subject area description 

Neurogastroenterology focuses on brain-gut interactions, and disease states related to alteration in these interactions. This position will specifically focus on the effects of food on these interactions.


Duties 

The person employed should be responsible for planning, recruitment and inclusion of patients in studies investigating the effects of food in the gastrointestinal tract, and lead treatment studies evaluating the effect of different dietary strategies in patients with IBS and FD, including analyses of the results from these studies.


Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years.


Assessment criteria 

Previous work with research in the field of nutrition, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal pathophysiology, as well as practical experience from clinical management and examination of patients with gastrointestinal diseases are clearly advantageous. Good command of English, both written and spoken language, is necessary. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for this position, where documented clinical training, good organizational skills, and ability to collaborate with different professions are considered particularly advantageous.
