Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.
The Department of Neuroscience conducts research on the normal function and development of the nervous system, on the changes that occur in diseases and injuries in the nervous system, and on new treatment options for patients with these conditions. Hereditary factors and acquired conditions are also studied that can contribute to the development of diseases of the nervous system, disorders of personality and behavior (eg addiction, crime). The research is conducted within the framework of four research profiles: Neurogenetics and the environment, Brain diseases and trauma, Cognition and behavior, and Sensorics, motor skills and plasticity.
The position is linked to Professor Elena Kozlova's research group, which conducts studies on the possibilities of using stem cells to improve the conditions for tissue repair and functional return after injury or disease in the central nervous system. The research is mainly focused on injuries in the spinal cord and on neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). For more information see: Regenerative Neurobiology - Department of Neuroscience - Uppsala University, Sweden (uu.se).
We are looking for an innovative and energetic person to work with studies aimed at developing a 3-dimensional multicellular culture of spinal cord, based on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and bioprinting. The research is part of a multinational project within the EU's Joint Program - Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND).
Job Description: To lead studies aimed at creating a 3-dimensional culture of spinal cord, containing multiple types of human iPSC-derived cells. The work includes, in collaboration with other research groups, developing differentiated cells and using bioprinting to integrate these into an organ-like structure (organoid), which can be used for pathophysiological and therapeutic studies in vitro of spinal cord disorders.
Qualification requirements:
- Doctoral degree or equivalent experience in biomedicine, biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, or other area of relevance to the project. Great importance is attached to assessing the applicant's suitability in the research group and the applicant's published work of relevance to the project.
- Very good experience of working with human iPSCmed research and relevant laboratory work is a requirement.
- Good experience of cell and molecular biology methods and of methods for cell and tissue imaging.
- Very good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is necessary.
Eligibility requirements: Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.
