Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology was founded in the late 1970s - when the College of Forestry moved to Umeå. The number of employees has since grown steadily is now around 100, including postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. In the late 1990s it was decided to join with the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University to form a research center, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology moved into the premises adjacent to the partner department and together have developed a close and successful collaboration on research issues, technology platforms, and training of master's and doctoral level students. The international element within UPSC is large, with over 40 nationalities represented.

The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level.

The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with the Department of Plant Physiology.

Duties:

Wood is cell walls of dead plant cells in the stem of trees. Cell wall synthesis is the result of the coordinated activity of hundreds of enzymes. The process I heavily regulated. Every component has to be present at the right location, in right amount and timed precisely. The plants therefore regulate the process carefully. Within the trees for the future project, we want to understand this regulation to be able to design perfect trees for the future biorefineries.

The researcher will have the following duties:

  • Design experiment and analyze the data.
  • Extract nucleic acids from tree samples.
  • Generate sequencing libraries
  • Analyze data from Next generation sequencing
  • Work with Hybrid Aspen as an experimental model
  • Analyze metabolic data from cell wall analysis
  • Write manuscripts for publication

Qualifications:

The candidate should possess a PhD in plant molecular biology or similar subject. The candidate should be proficient in the English language and be able to work independent and as a member of a research group. We are looking for a person with experience from working with RNA and the generation of sequencing libraries. Experience from analysis of sequencing data is demanded. The person we are looking for also has experience from metabolic analysis of cell wall material and have used hybrid aspen or trees as experimental model.

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarly looking for candidates that have received their PhD no later than three years ago.
