Postdoc (scholarship) in Organic Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

The workplace

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher (2 years) to work on the development of new polymerization methods based on biobased aromatic platform molecules towards electric and ionic conducting polymers. The project is located at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and supervised by Dr. Peter Olsén, Dr. Jakob Wohlert, and Prof. Lars A. Berglund. The postdoc is funded by a 2-year stipend from the Åforsk foundation (tax-free, ca. 27 000 SEK/month). The starting date is flexible, ideally Feb 2023, but later starting dates can be negotiated. The postdoc will be part of the larger biocomposites group at KTH (>25 people) and is foreseen to take an active role in the group’s ongoing activities. Both Swedish and International candidates are welcome.

Project description

Conducting polymers for emerging green technologies is central to a future sustainable society. However, to date, there are very few biobased alternatives. The research program will try to address this by creating new types of conducting polymers from biomass. This project starts from the foundation, identifying new biobased platform molecules, developing new polymer synthetic pathways, and exploring the final properties of electroactive polymers. Mainly, we will target platform molecules derived from lignin, a waste product from the pulping industry; however, other platform molecules will be explored. The research program has its foundation in synthetic chemistry. As such, we are searching for a person with a strong interest in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Green Chemistry, or similar.

Qualifications

Requirements,

A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline. The applicant should have a relevant background in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or Green Chemistry. Previous work on transition metal catalysis is considered a merit. Previous work with metathesis polymerization is considered a merit.
