Work duties and Project description
We are looking for a PostDoc in Macromolecular Chemistry. The position will be at group of Macromolecular Chemistry, Departmemt of Chemistry - Ångström.

The PostDoc will have active role in a collaborative project that aims to develop functional and sustainable polymers by taking advantage of the inherent high complexity of renewable building blocks. A lot of biomass has rather complicated chemical structure and the derived bio-based monomers have generally different, bulky and/or unsaturated substituents. The project seeks to incorporate these functional groups in a controlled way along the macromolecules to precisely dictate the final polymer properties.

The ideal candidate has a background in organic and/or macromolecular chemistry. The main task will be the design and application of new organocatalytic routes to synthesize renewable co-polyesters with well-defined microstructure and functional group positioning. The research activity will be focused on:

  • the design of new organocatalysts for ring-opening copolymerization;
  • the development of polymerization methodologies for a broad monomer scope;
  • fine characterization of the macromolecular structure to elucidate the relationship between the structure and physical properties.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

Requirements
PhD degree in Chemistry, Organic and/or Macromolecular Chemistry or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Chemistry, Organic and/or Macromolecular Chemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

  • Competence, documented by scientific publications, in Chemistry, Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry, Polymer Science, and/or Catalysis
  • Expertise in ring-opening polymerization and mastery of analytical characterization methods: 1D and 2D NMR, MASS, IR, UV
  • Excellent oral and written communication ability in English
  • Independence and analytical problem solving-ability, a proactive working approach, reliability and curiosity

Desirable qualifications

             - regio- and stereo-selective synthesis and characterization
- characterization methods for macromolecular properties
- physical properties of macromolecules in solution

  • Skills in experimental procedures & techniques (ideally synthesis in inert atmosphere, e.g. Schlenk techniques, purification and separation methods, e.g. chromatography, crystallization)
  • Experience in supervision and leadership
  • Ability to adapt to new situations and learn new things
  • Ability to plan and organize, set deadlines and priorities, develop timelines and project plans

Application procedure
The application should include a statement of research interest, CV. Also, contact information of at least two reference persons should be included.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date is as soon as possible or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
