Offer Description

This postdoctoral position provides an exceptional opportunity to leverage your expertise in materials research to innovate in the field of water purification and reuse. Your primary role will involve the design and development of cutting-edge, protein-embedded separation membranes that exhibit unparalleled selectivity. You will be collaborating closely with a specialized team of researchers from diverse disciplines, as well as directly partnering with the pioneering startup, Retein AB. If you're an imaginative, intellectually curious individual eager to shape the future landscape of water handling technology through bio-mimicry, this role is tailor-made for you.

Information about the division and the department
In this postdoctoral project, you'll become an integral member of the Division of Applied Chemistry within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering . The division is renowned for its practical orientation, specifically geared toward pioneering new materials.

Your project will be at the cutting edge of water purification technology, involving the development of next-generation separation membranes akin to those used in reverse osmosis systems. Your responsibilities will be multifaceted, ranging from establishing production protocols for highly selective membranes to exploring alternative synthesis techniques and monomers to fine-tune membrane attributes and protein integration.

In a synergistic initiative, another postdoctoral project is concurrently laying the groundwork for a pilot-scale production unit focused on membrane protein synthesis. This collaborative effort provides a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary engagement. You will be working on formulating and implementing the membrane's formation and testing methodologies, and will also contribute to initiatives aimed at stabilizing the proteins integrated within these membranes.
If you're keen on being at the forefront of technological advancements in water purification for circular water use, this role offers an exceptional platform for impactful research and innovation.

Major responsibilities
During your postdoc, you will communicate the results from your project by publishing articles in relevant peer-reviewed international scientific journals and by participating in national and international meetings and conferences. Within the daily work as a postdoc, our ambition is that you find variation and interact with not only other postdoctoral fellows, but also undergraduate students, PhD students, senior researchers and professors.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue the research project and to set-up membrane production. The position will be dedicated towards scientific research, yet in an entrepreneurial setting with direct applications in mind. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing in English.

Qualifications
The most important qualification is your desire to devotedly use your skills in membrane formation to set up a pilot-scale production unit. You have a PhD in polymer chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or equivalent. You appreciate to work experimentally, but also with theoretical tools. Previous experience working with membrane formation and characterization is necessary.

You must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
