Offer Description
Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology
The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) is part of the Faculty of Forest Science, has about 50 employees and is based in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department conducts high-quality research and education at a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The main focus in Umeå is on value chains in the bio-based industry where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / refined, used and reused cost-effectively for various purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, focus is on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro level, wood composites and wood adhesives, and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.
Duties:
Wood properties of standing trees are affected by factors that influence the growth or form of the stem. Forest stand conditions are often changed through silvicultural operations aiming to promote growth rate or improve stem. Some stand conditions and tree characteristics can be measured remotely, as for example using remote sensing technologies. Ideally, such technologies will provide information about stem form and crown attributes, which will relate to stand composition. There is the potential to relate stand conditions to crown attributes, and then to relate these factors to stem wood properties for Swedish conditions. However, limited work has combined these scales of measurement or determined the minimum level of detail required for accurate predictions of wood properties. Results on the wood quality of single trees are useful for early evaluation of sawn timber quality and wiser management of forest resources.
Qualifications:
A position as a postdoctor is intended for a researcher early in their career, we are therefore primarily looking for candidates who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years ago. The doctoral degree can be in one of the following areas: forestry, wood science and technology, material science, mechanical engineering, or other relevant subject. Experience in one or several of the following are necessary: non-destructive testing of forest trees, measuring of growth and wood properties at the laboratory, and statistical analysis and programming. Previous experiences in forest related subjects are desirable. Fluent English language, both in writing and speaking is required. Knowledge of Swedish is meriting.
The fellow is expected to work and collaborate within a new Horizon Europe project on the optimization of multifunctional forest-based value chains. The aim is to monitor individual tree attributes, health, and biodiversity ensuring a holistic approach to multifunctional forest management. We are thus looking for a highly motivated individual who is interested in a continued academic career in forestry and wood science. In assessing the applications for the position, particular emphasis will be placed on (1) applicants' scientific proficiency in forest sciences, and (2) their ability to develop their own line of research in modelling wood quality, complementing the ongoing research within the group. More info about the activities of the group can be found here: https://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-biomaterials-technology/travetenskap/fibres-adhesives--composites/
We will also place emphasis on the applicant's personal characteristics and suitability. The applicants' ability to work constructively in a small group and to take own initiatives is very important.
