Updated: about 1 year ago

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Thematic Studies was the first in Sweden to offer an academic setting for thematically organised, interdisciplinary, socially relevant research. We combine strong research with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses, often in collaboration with actors outside the university. Our point of departure is a critical, reflective approach, and we seek to develop new ways of understanding established social phenomena, in order to benefit both scientific and social development.

Hereby advertises a position as
Postdoc in Technology and Social Change
formally based at the Department of Thematic Studies

Technology and Social Change is a nationally and internationally leading environment for research and education in how people create and use technology, and how technological change is interwoven with cultural patterns, everyday life, politics, ethics and economy. Third cycle and first cycle studies specialising in issues of technology and social change are carried out at the department.

The selected candidate for this position will work with the project “A Feminist Approach to Medical Screening”. The overarching aim of this project is to examine subjectivity, agency and normative aspects of medical screening programmes. The project combines phenomenological analysis of lived experiences of embodiment, health, normality, illness, and risk with an analysis of how norms and values can come to be incorporated into medical technologies and medical practices, and with analysis of the co-emergence of technological, socio-political, economic and ethical dimensions when screening technology is developed and used. The selected candidate will primarily work with philosophy of medicine and bioethical analysis within the sub-project “Conceiving and performing pre-conception care.”

The subproject “Conceiving and performing pre-conception care” examines the case of preconception carrier screening. This screening is performed in the Netherlands. Through this screening, couples can be screened for an increased risk of having a child with one of circa 50 recessively inherited conditions. The successful candidate is expected to work independently and together with other researchers within the research team. Teaching can be parts of the tasks within this position (maximum 20% of the position). Analysis of already collected interview material - interviews with couples who have been offered this screening, and health care personnel – can also be part of the work within this position.

It is a requirement for this position that the applicant has documented scientific expertise in philosophy of medicine, bioethics, or medical anthropology. It is also a requirement that the applicant has a good ability to express her- or himself in spoken and written English.

Documented scientific expertise in phenomenology of medicine is of particular merit.

Documented scientific expertise in feminist theory or science and technology studies are of merit. Documented scientific expertise in combining qualitative analysis of interviews with philosophy is also of merit.
