Postdoc in renewable energy system analysis and battery performance monitoring

Updated: 21 days ago
Deadline: 2024/0527

Mälardalen University (MDU) is the youngest university in Sweden. In line with our vision, to be a progressive and collaborative University where we shape a sustainable future together, we wish to make a difference.

Do you want to be involved and contribute to our development?

Together, we can create a sustainable future through knowledge and innovation. We believe that knowledge and new perspectives are best attained and reached together in collaboration with others – our colleagues, students, the private and public sectors, both nationally and internationally.

At the Academy for Economics, Society and Technology, our students study for, among other things, university and civil engineers, political scientists and economists. With us, the research focuses are industrial economics and organization and the energy of the future. Our work takes place in collaboration and in strategic agreements with companies, organizations and authorities in the region.

Position description

The purpose of the position is to give the employee an early opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and to create the conditions for further acquisitions of qualifications after completing the doctoral degree. The position is part of efforts to underpin the future supply of skills.

Applications should aim at internationally leading and scientifically excellent research at MDU that directly or indirectly addresses renewable energy system analysis where electricity storage in batteries is an important part. To determine the state of health (SoH) and thereby the value to be used for second life applications as well as for continuous monitoring of state of charge (SoC) and evaluation of degradation, AI-models are developed from both experimental battery test data and by information from literature to model battery packs performance. Concerning the energy system analysis production of solar cell power, wind power, CHP from biomass and hydro power is considered where balancing production to consumption is made on an hourly basis. The demand for storage of electric power is determined. Here also V2G and G2V is considered as well as stationary battery packs.

To make this possible computer- and software-controlled systems are used. These can adapt to changing conditions and make decisions based on their inputs. Smart systems can incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to enable them to learn, reason, and make decisions autonomously. The system will also be made as a simulator which can be used to test different scenarios.

Teaching may be included with a maximum of 20%.

Qualifications requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in energy engineering including energy system modelling

The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. You have not previously held a position as a postdoctoral researcher in the same or related subject area at MDU that exceeds one year.

The applicant should have knowledge about batteries and renewable energy systems with PV, wind, biomass and hydropower as well as use of energy.

Experience in renewable energy systems modelling and investigations as well as in use of batteries as storage in such systems is of special interest in the evaluation.

Assesment criteria

Experience in renewable energy systems modelling and investigations. Knowledge about use of batteries as storage in such systems is of special interest in the evaluation.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

A postdoctoral researcher should be able to work independently within the framework of the specified tasks. This includes conducting simulations of systems, interpreting them, and participating in the evaluation of experimental battery tests to generate data used in the modeling and simulations of sustainable energy systems.

We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.
