Postdoc in Plant-based stretchable batteries

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 31 Mar 2023

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

At the Department of Science and Technology, at the university’s Norrköping campus, we provide education and conduct research in physics and electronics, communications/logistics and media- and information technology. The department is recognised for its work in fields including logistics, visualisation and organic electronics. We combine academic excellence with fruitful collaboration with the Community.

We are now looking to appoint a Postdoc in Applied Physics, placed at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org ). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org

Your work assignments
A new generation of energy storage devices is need to power electronics within the fast-growing areas of wearables and Internet of Things (IoT). Issues that need to be overcome in current battery systems include mechanical rigidity, environmental impact, cost and safety. The postdoc will address these challenges by developing plant-based, freely deformable, and high-performance organic batteries. The main objectives are i) to process plant-derived materials and synthesize biocompatible/biodegradable organic materials, ii) to formulate soft and elastic composites for battery components, and iii) to develop manufacturing processes for device assembly and integration. The research will include design and manufacturing of materials and devices, as well as characterization of electrical, ionic, electrochemical, and mechanical properties of materials and batteries.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Your workplace
The Postdoc will work under the guidance of Assistant Prof. Nara Kim in the Soft Electronics group, headed by Senior Associate Prof. Klas Tybrandt, at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE). Within the Soft Electronics group we develop composite materials, design concepts and devices for soft and deformable electronic systems. Areas of special interest are stretchable (semi)conductors, wearables, energy harvesting/storage, and neural interface technologies. Many of our projects are based on national and international collaborations including a variety of competences. Read more at: www.liu.se/soft-electronics

The Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE) at the Department of Science and Technology is a vibrant, international, and collaborative research environment of around 130 researchers. We study conducting organic materials and hybrid materials, and their use in an array of areas spanning energy harvesting, printed electronics, photonics, and bioelectronics. Our activities span the range from basic research to commercialization, the latter carried out in close collaboration with the institute RISE. Read more at www.liu.se/loe

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School <https://wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school />, an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

Your qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

Experiences and skills in organic materials science, formulating structured composites, stretchable electronics, and battery techniques are favorable for the position. Verifiable verbal and writing communication skills in English are a requirement. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to communicate clearly and to interact with colleagues and staff are highly desirable. The interested candidate should be strongly self-motivated, show a keen interest in science and fundamental research, and be willing to work in a team. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Terms of employment
This post is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The position as a postdoc is full-time.

Starting date
