Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 2023/0038

Mälardalen University is growing and evolving due to increased research funding from the Swedish Government. Join our team on this exciting journey towards MDU`s vision, to be a progressive and collaborative University where together we shape a sustainable future. You can make a difference. Together, we can create a sustainable future through knowledge and innovation. We believe that knowledge and new perspectives are best attained and reached together in collaboration with others – our colleagues, students, the private and public sectors, both nationally and internationally.

Around 20 000 students are currently studying courses and programmes with us in the various domains. We offer education in areas such as design and communication, economics, health, engineering and technology, preschool and compulsory school teacher training as well as in chamber music and opera. In most of our areas we also offer programmes entirely taught in English. We conduct research in all disciplinary domains and our research in Future Energy and Embedded Systems is internationally prominent.

Mälardalen University is located in Sweden, on both sides of Lake Mälaren, with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås. Mälardalen is a region dominated by strong growth with several multinational companies based here such as ABB, Volvo, Westinghouse, Alstom and Northvolt. We enjoy close cooperation with the region’s private sector, municipalities, and county councils.

At the School of Business, Society and Engineering our students are studying to be for example Bachelors or Masters of Engineering, political scientists and business administrators. Here we have the research specialisations of Industrial Engineering and Management, and Future Energy. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

Take the chance to become a postdoctoral researcher at Sweden's newest university. We are now announcing four postdoctoral positions for those who want to build our future, contributing not only to the development of our university but also to our country.

The four postdoctoral positions (one for each school) are part of MDU's strategic initiative in health and welfare technology where research and collaboration will be developed. The postdoctoral projects are all interdisciplinary and together with the other postdoctoral researchers and supervisors you will be part of both academy-specific and interdisciplinary groups that meet regularly for seminars and other research-related activities.

Employment information

Employment: Temporary employment
Scope: Full time
Closing date for application: 2023-02-28
Campus location: Eskilstuna and Västerås
School: School of Business, Society and Engineering, (EST)

Position description

As post-doc researcher you will work on a research project aimed at developing a deeper understanding of processes of technology-based transformation of working practices in healthcare settings that require collaboration between different professional communities, and how to improve them. This includes exploring the collaboration between medical staff and scholarly researchers (in particular, engineers) who are engaged in innovating healthcare settings through ventilation design, mechanical engineering, and aerosol technology for infection control. Such collaboration is often compromised due to the differences between the involved professional backgrounds and knowledge fields.

As part of your employment you will be expected to:

  • Conduct a review of the literature concerning technological innovation in healthcare settings by exploring which aspects (limits and opportunities) influence the collaboration between different professional communities differently affected by technological innovation.
  • Conduct research activities (for example, interviews, participant observations, workshops) to understand the general knowledge among the surgical staff regarding how ventilation systems work, how ventilation eliminates infectious pathogens, what might affect ventilation performance, and how their work practice may or may not affect future post-operative infections.
  • Conduct research activities to compare surgical staff’s views with what scholarly researchers (design engineers and aerosol scientists) know and try to qualify (through qualitative methods) and quantify (through quantitative methods) this gap.
  • Design a “tool”, broadly meant, (through design-based or visual methods) that enables the professional communities at stake (design engineers and aerosol scientists on one hand and the surgical staff on the other) to communicate and minimize reciprocal misunderstandings while promoting the adjustment of working practices in medical settings to reduce post-operative infections.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Business Administration or Industrial Engineering and Management or equivalent.

The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.

The candidate should be able to show research experience in national and/or international projects on technological innovation in working environments; and good command of written and spoken Swedish and English.

The candidate should also be able to show good collaborative skills; capacity to organize and conduct work activities independently; experience of or openness to interdisciplinarity; as well as a propositional attitude.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Merit

Strong merits for this position are knowledge in Science and Technology Studies (STS), research experience in health and welfare technology, scientific publications other than the thesis, experience of collaboration in writing project applications, as well as knowledge of qualitative data analysis software (for example, Atlas.ti or Nvivo).

Qualifications that are considered to be a merit are knowledge of statistical software for data analysis (for example SPSS), knowledge of visual and participatory methods to conduct research activities with individuals and groups, participation at national and/or international conferences, participation in research networks, previous experience in organizing or co-organizing academic events (for example, seminars, workshops, conferences).
