Postdoc in Materials science

Updated: about 2 months ago
Deadline: 03 May 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work assignments

The project for which we are looking for new staff concerns the exploration of novel elemental 2D materials, inspired by our recent experimental discovery of single-atom-thick gold, namely golden (accepted in Nature Synthesis; patent pending). The synthetic strategy we have developed is a unique elaborate route comprising thin film deposition, thermodynamic interface reaction, and chemical etching.

A promising candidate will primarily optimize the deposition and subsequent physical-chemical processes to produce the elemental 2D materials; perform thorough characterization by electron microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and other related techniques; and closely work with a theoretical team carrying out ab initio molecular dynamics and DFT simulations to elucidate the structural dynamics of the 2D materials.

Due to the 2D confinement, the resulting new elemental 2D materials are expected to show extraordinary electronic, plasmonic, mechanical, and chemical properties. Depending upon the obtained properties, relevant applications are explored.

The position is part of a large research project, and the candidate will be part of an international team (> 20 people), with extensive theoretical and experimental activities

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

You must have a doctoral degree in physics/chemistry or similar. You must have experience in CVD/PVD, and should have extensive experience in structural characterizations of 2D materials with atomic precision using, e.g., TEM, STM, and AFM, and analyses of fundamental properties such as optimal, plasmonic, and electronic properties. You must have documented excellent skills in writing (publications in scientific journals of high reputation) and you must have excellent skills in communication (English).

We are also looking for those who have solid knowledge of organic/inorganic chemistry and biology besides the above-mentioned must-skills since the synthetic process and applications are interdisciplinary. Hands-on experience in programming is also appreciated for enhancing data analysis and process automation.

You should also be engaged and have a positive attitude towards working in a team. You are efficient and goal oriented.

The workplace

You will be employed in the Materials Design division at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) . The division is divided in three research units; Materials theory, Applied electrochemistry, and Thin films and nanolaminated materials. The post doc will be working in the latter unit, but will collaborate closely with other units and divisions at IFM, in areas such as theory and modelling and advanced characterization.

The employment

This employment is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The employment is full-time.

Starting date by agreement.
