Postdoc in Materials Science

Updated: 10 days ago
Deadline: 17 Apr 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work assignments

The position involves research and investigations with an advanced electron microscope against structural and chemical characterization of low-dimensional materials during in-situ exposure to gas and vapor. The materials are mainly nanostructured carbides, MXenes, which are found as two-dimensional layers that are arranged in thin films or nanoparticles. Through your studies, you will change surface terminations, and investigate the emerging properties of the materials in their interaction with the applied environment.

In addition, you will develop methods and investigate the conditions for increasing the information content of the measurements. Specifically, the composition, chemistry and structural properties of the materials will be investigated by TEM, HAADF/ABF-STEM, as well as by spectroscopy, EELS.

The studies will be performed in-house at the group's monochromated and double-corrected Titan3, which will be replaced with a state-of-the-art instrument in 2025. A new FIB for sample preparation will be installed in 2024.

The materials are developed and synthesized in close collaboration with local colleagues who carry out the synthesis work, as well as with other colleagues in Sweden, Europe and the USA. The duties also include disseminating research results through publication in scientific journals and through conference participation

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for someone with PhD in one of the fields of materials physics, structural chemistry or similar. Specifically, knowledge of low-dimensional materials is in demand. To exploit the potential of the group's instruments, the applicant must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in electron microscopy and chemical imaging with atomic resolution. More specifically, knowledge and independent management of the latest generation of electron-optic components such as Cs correctors and different types of electron optic components are sought. Furthermore, there is a demand for independent management of high-resolution spectroscopy (EELS or EDX), in-situ experiments or equivalent technologically advanced methods. We also think you have knowledge and skills of calculations/ simulations of spectroscopy and structure imaging.

You are self-motivated, communicative, helpful and committed to your work.
