Job description

The division of Energy Systems (dES), within the Department of Energy Technology at KTH, has been awarded funding as part of the Horizon Europe project IAM COMPACT. The project aims to support the achievement of global climate goals and the design of the next round of NDCs for major emitters and non-high-income countries. One Work Package of the project is dedicated to developing technical capacity and promoting ownership in integrated assessment modelling in non-high-income countries and it is led by KTH.

As a Postdoc in the project, you will:

  • Independently coordinate and train analysts and researchers in the pilot countries of the IAM COMPACT project (Ethiopia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Ukraine) on energy-economy-environment, integrated resource modelling and similar. This also involves coordinating and working with the project partners contributing to the task and keeping the schedule of the activities.
  • Participate in modelling activities for the pilot countries, for example by engaging with local stakeholders, designing scenarios, collecting data via publicly available datasets, co-developing and reviewing model applications and helping interpret modelling results.
  • Participate in a broader range of research activities aimed at the development of knowledge, research methods, tools, applications and datasets for integrated resource assessment at the division of Energy Systems and bring fresh, new ideas.
  • Publish scientific papers.
  • Assist in the supervision of Master and PhD students in the division.
  • Participate in teaching, division and department tasks.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, with significant focus on environmental sciences, energy-economy-environment modelling, energy systems modelling, integrated assessment modelling or water-energy-food nexus methodologies. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • You have willingness to develop teaching skills.
  • You have knowledge and awareness about gender equality and equal treatment.
  • You are independent, engaged, open and innovative in your research and work.

Preferred qualifications

  • We see it as a merit if you have experience with modelling tools and methods such as (but not limited to) PyPSA, TIMES, LEAP, MESSAGE, OSeMOSYS, WEAP, AEZ, Input-Output modelling or similar.
  • We see it as a strong merit if you are willing to bring to the division new research ideas for energy systems and integrated resource assessment research and capacity development.
  • As a person, you are willing and able to work in teams, both within the division and in international contexts.
  • You feel a strong drive in creating impact towards sustainable development.

    About the employment

    The position offered is for, at the most, two years.

    A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation.
