Around 20 000 students are currently studying courses and programmes with us in the various domains. We offer education in areas such as design and communication, economics, health, engineering and technology, preschool and compulsory school teacher training as well as in chamber music and opera. In most of our areas we also offer programmes entirely taught in English. We conduct research in all disciplinary domains and our research in Future Energy and Embedded Systems is internationally prominent.
Mälardalen University is located in Sweden, on both sides of Lake Mälaren, with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås. Mälardalen is a region dominated by strong growth with several multinational companies based here such as ABB, Volvo, Westinghouse, Alstom and Northvolt. We enjoy close cooperation with the region’s private sector, municipalities, and county councils.

At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Position description

In close cooperation with the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and with Spotify, Ericsson, and teenage engineering, we are looking for a postdoctoral fellow for the Information Retrieval in Embedded Systems for Audiovisual Artistic Processes with funding from the Knowledge Development Foundation. The project explores interaction design for musical interaction between participants to demonstrate that distributed music performance can create a sense of immersion in merged reality.

The project explores interaction design as a tool to demonstrate how, even in distributed music performances, you can create a sense of immersion and exchange between participants and audience in merged reality. The hypothesis is that immersion requires access to continuously relevant (musical) information and that this is available to the system as well as to all participants. Well-designed information retrieval integrated with creative flows is essential to the artistic process, which in turn is essential to immersion.

You will explore and develop designs and interactive prototypes that enable artists to use and reuse artistic material from their own previous work as well as from large databases. This material supports reflection on artistic decisions made in the moment during rehearsal or performance. When space and participation are in physical dissolution, other sensory parameters, such as the spatial properties of sound, become all the more important and a holistic perspective is crucial.

The tasks include experiential and participatory design, sketching and implementation of interactive prototypes, which includes media programming, merged reality, artificial intelligence and distributed systems. The whole project is situated between interaction design research and artistic research in music and intermedia.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in computer science, media technology, electronics or an artistic doctorate with a focus on electroacoustic music and intermedia or equivalent. The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.

You must be able to demonstrate breadth in both knowledge and abilities and demonstrate that you can combine design, technology and artistry. Even if, for example, you have a focus in computer science, you must be able to demonstrate your ability in design and art.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

In addition to academic merits, publishing of phonograms, concerts, installations, portfolio of works, publishing of software, or innovations in electronic musical, or video instruments are meritorious for employment.
