Postdoc for research on deep learning for pathology diagnostics

Updated: about 2 months ago
Deadline: 03 Nov 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are searching for a Postdoc for research on deep learning for pathology diagnostics at the Department of Science and Technology.

The position is part of a joint collaboration between the two of the largest research programs in Sweden, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), with the ultimate goal of solving ground-breaking research questions across disciplines.

Work assignments

A Postdoc will essentially carry out research. The position may also involve teaching, but during no more than a fifth of work time. As a postdoctoral researcher in this project, you will collaborate with medical and technical scientists, as well as clinical colleagues.

Pathology diagnostics is a central part of the clinical trajectory for many patients. Pathology involves microscopic study of human tissues and cell samples to detect and classify disease states. As imaging data increasingly is becoming digitized, there are ample opportunities for AI to diagnostically analyze the images – often at a level comparable to human experts. The potential benefits of AI are perhaps greatest in low-resource settings lacking medical resources, which is one target scenario for our research.

The method development in this project will be at a high technical level, for instance exploring novel uncertainty estimation methods for AI classification. A key aspect of our work is also to thoroughly address the demands from real clinical usage. Such demands include high performance, close adherence to diagnostic workflows, and capacity to deal with data of limited quality. You will be active in an environment with several experts working towards similar goals.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for highly motivated and creative researchers with a PhD degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, Engineering or Biomedical Sciences or similar. You have a strong interest in machine learning and image analysis. Previous experience with deep learning is a necessity for these positions. You have an affinity with medical applications, and experience from whole-slide imaging in histology is a strong merit. Good communication skills and expertise in software development are essential.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

The workplace

The workplace for the position is the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV), at Linköping University Hospital. CMIV is an interdisciplinary research center with great international impact. Through close collaboration between clinical practice and research in engineering and medicine CMIV creates solutions for future challenges. The goal is to create innovative methods and tools for image analysis and visualization that can be applied in healthcare and medical research. CMIV is connected to the pathology department of Linköping University Hospital, being a global pioneer for digital pathology in clinical use since more than 10 years. Read more at www.liu.se/cmiv

The position is also part of the WASP and DDLS programmes. Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on data-driven research, within fields essential for improving the people’s lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability. The programme will train the next generation of life scientists and create a strong computational and data science base. The program aims to strengthen national collaborations between universities, bridge the research communities of life sciences and data sciences, and create partnerships with industry, healthcare and other national and international actors.
