Position description

The School of Business, Society and Engineering is looking for 1 PhD student in energy and environmental engineering with focus on aero-engine and aircraft system electrification. The position involves working within the research specialization Future Energy Center (FEC).

The position relates to an ongoing large EU project (>50MEuro) with nearly 40 industrial and academic partners. The work is an integral part of the research activities conducted under a number of projects related to flight electrification at FEC. Modelling and simulation of hybrid-electric aero-engine performance and environmental impact will be a key focus of this work. The project also includes preliminary system design and mission analysis. A large part of the work will be done at - or in close contact with - several partner organizations. The successful candidate is therefore expected to have skills in energy system modelling, propulsion technology, aircraft design, mathematical optimization, as well as be able to interact effectively with partner research institutes, industry, colleagues and other stakeholders.

Employment is limited and equivalent to full-time studies at the graduate level for 4 years.

Qualifications

Employment as a doctoral student requires admittance to a graduate (research) program within a Swedish university. Reference is made to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 (SFS 1993: 100). To be accepted to the graduate (research) program in Energy and Environmental Engineering the student should have one of the following:

  • Completed a Master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits (Swedish: civilingenjör) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or engineering physics.
  • Completed a four-year science education with technical content equivalent to a Master’s degree within the above subjects.

The underlying project is sensitive, and therefore only applications from candidates holding Swedish or EU citizenship will be considered.

Assessment criteria

The school will select the most suitable candidate for this position following a combined evaluation of competence and skills, in addition to documented qualifications. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. Personal suitability will be judged in relation to the candidate’s capacity to effectively carry out the project research work, to integrate and contribute to a positive development of the research environment at MDU, as well as deliver value to the project's partner organizations.

MDU continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at MDU. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Application

The application must be written in English and include the following: Cover letter (preferably max 1 page), short CV (preferably max 2 pages), copies of relevant previous work (such as extended course projects, thesis, scientific publications or manuscripts or technical reports, or even outline of a thesis under submission), attested copies of completed education, grades and other certificates, as well as any letters of recommendation and the names and contact details of two referees. The cover letter must include a brief description of the reasons why you are interested in applying for the particular postgraduate employment, why your profile makes a good fit and your future goals.

Application is made online. Make your application by clicking the "Apply" button below.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the application is complete in accordance with the advertisement and will reach the University no later than closing date for application.
