One summer work position in Condensed Matter Theory at Physics department (PA2024/1610)

Updated: 5 days ago
Deadline: 22 May 2024

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The work place is the division of Mathematical physics, Physics department. Information about the division can be found at the division webpage, https://www.matfys.lu.se/

The summer work position is financed by the Royal Physiographic Society of Lund.

Work duties

The work duties will be to perform research within the field of theoretical condensed matter physics, with the focus on altermagnetism. Altermagnetism is a recently discovered magnetic phase with peculiar symmetry properties, which has potential applications in spintronics. It is an open question how these symmetry properties show up in experimentally measurable quantities, what would be the best way to determine if a material is altermagnetic and how to quantify the altermagnetic effects.

The purpose of this project is to study altermagnets at the two-particle level. In particular, the goal is to determine the dynamic (spin) susceptibilities of altermagnetic metals. This can involve both lattice and continuum models of altermagnets, including electronic correlation effects. A succesful result would show how to identify altermagnets in neutron scattering experiments.

Qualifications
  • Ongoing Swedish university education in physics or another subject relevant for the project, at bachelor, master or equivalent level.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

Other merits
  • Knowledge about the specific topic of the internship project applied for is considered a merit.
  • Consideration will be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence.

Terms of employment

Fixed term employment for 2,5-3 months on 50-100%, during the summer 2024. Starting date and scope is decided in agreement with the project contact person.
