Deadline: 30 Apr 2023

Ref. No. SU FV-1163-23

at the Department of Physics . Closing date: 2023-04-30.

The Department of Physics is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science and hosts a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. Many of the 250 employees (out of which 95 are PhD students) have been internationally recruited. The Department of Physics is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which in addition houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

To support the extensive experimental research and teaching within the department there is a Technical Division with 20 technicians. We are now looking for a laser technician who will have the main technical responsibility for the department’s laser systems.

Main responsibilities
As laser technician, you will be a member of the Technical Division within the Department of Physics. The Technical Division is fundamental resource for the various research projects and the teaching activities at the department. Your activities will most often be in close collaboration with other technical and scientific staff. You will be main responsible for the technical aspects of many of the laser systems in use at the department (currently about 50 lasers spanning from cw single-mode lasers to amplified femtosecond systems and a very wide intensity range).

Your general task will be to assist the research groups applying lasers and to help secure a continuous high level of competence in the area. In addition, you will be required to address various test and design tasks including optimization and maintenance of the many different laser systems, laser performance diagnostics, and optics design. We expect you to follow the developments in laser technology and to build a network with other experts and enterprises. As the department’s laser technician you will also be strongly involved in laser safety issues. This means that you have to keep yourself updated on rules and regulations regarding laser handling and in collaboration with the department’s safety officer implement these in local laser handling routines.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for someone with a University education in natural science with a broad knowledge and comprehensive experience in operation and maintenance of laser systems. The successful candidate should have hands-on knowledge of high-power laser systems (Class 4), analysis of beam quality and advanced optics design. Experience in operation and maintenance of femtosecond laser systems (particularly relevant are amplified systems), design and set-up of laser cavities, and nonlinear optical frequency conversion are considered meritorious. Higher level education such as a PhD is also meritorious.

As a member of the technical division you will also have a possibility to support colleagues in other technical areas. Therefore we will also value technical qualities and experience in other disciplines supporting and extending the abilities of the technical division. Working close to research also requires that you have the driving force to develop new skills and get involved in new technical areas. We want you to show initiative and have the motivation to successfully conduct the projects you are involved in.
