CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science. The research groups are organized in three thematic programs: Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Cell Biology and Infection and Cancer. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

A laboratory technician position is available in the research group of Professor Kenneth Chien. The team consists of physicians and scientists who are focused on studying cardiogenesis in multiple model organisms and its implications for regenerative medicine. The research goal is to find novel pathways and principles for regenerative medicine in general, and to repair damaged cardiac muscle cells in particular.

Your main priority will be to provide assistance to a senior researcher in the lab in the execution of experiments relating to the study of salamander heart regeneration. This will involve: cryosectioning, immunofluorescent staining, in situ hybridization, high-content imaging, generation of BSL-2 level recombinant proteins, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and differentiation of cardiac progenitor cells from hESCs. Additionally, you will be required to assist with ultrasound imaging of salamander hearts. Depending on the project progress you will be expected to learn and apply new techniques.

Entry requirements
A suitable background is a Master’s degree in a relevant area. You must have a good understanding of basic molecular biology techniques and proof of experience in independent operation of a FACS machine, including single cell sorting on 384-well plates for single cell RNA-sequencing. Experience with the Vevo 3100 imaging system, high-content imaging on a scanner and working under BSL-2 conditions is meriting. Also experience in handling, processing and histological analysis of salamander tissue is meriting

Experience of successfully and independently running even a small project from beginning to end including basic interpretation of your data with reportable results will be highly valued.

Skills and personal qualities
You are thorough, diligent and used to documenting and organizing your work. You work in a clean and precise way. We expect you to be a positive, flexible person with good communication skills who appreciates being in a highly dynamic international research team. Due to the progressive nature of a scientific project we expect you to be comfortable with learning new methods.
