Offer Description

at the Department of Environmental Science . Closing date: 31 March 2024.

The Department of Environmental Science is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The department consists of four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focus on chemical contaminants, ecotoxicology, atmospheric science and biogeochemistry. The Biogeochemistry Unit has strong, externally-funded research with focus on the composition and functioning of the biogeosphere-atmosphere system, how it is affected by anthropogenic perturbations such as climate warming, and the natural cycles of carbon and other important elements and substances. Addressing current research questions in biogeochemistry heavily relies on in-house access to a broad range of core biogeochemistry analyses for example pH and alkalinity, dissolved and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, nutrients, greenhouse gases, major ions, major elements, metals and physical properties of sediments and soils.

We are now seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician to function as support to ongoing research activities, and be the main responsible person for the core biogeochemistry analyses. The successful candidate will join a group of six laboratory technicians and research engineers who work closely with our research groups and/or with environmental monitoring.

Main responsibilities
Main responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of the unit’s core-biogeochemistry analytical systems (including TOC analyzer, UV-VIS/Fluorescence instrument, Ion Chromatograph, Nutrient analyzer, GC-FID, GC-FID-ECD and GC-CVAFS/CVAFS for Hg analysis and Hg, pH-electrodes, surface area analyzer) and freezers.
  • Quality assurance and continuity of e.g. the analytical methods associated with the techniques mentioned above. This includes bridging between generations of PhD students and post docs.
  • Maintaining inventories of samples and standards.
  • Contribute to the laboratory safety work at the unit by providing support in laboratory and field risk assessments, purchasing of chemicals, handling of gases and chemical inventories to the research groups, as well as assist the head of the unit in documentation and follow-up of the laboratory safety work.
  • Management of some of the laboratories at the unit

Qualification requirements
We are looking for someone who is organized and service-oriented with a great aptitude for learning new techniques and a documented experience of laboratory methods and data management. High ability to work efficiently both in groups and individually is essential.

  • M.Sc. within natural sciences or engineering, or corresponding competence.
  • Solid laboratory work experience and preferably also past experiences as a laboratory technician.
  • Experience with several of the techniques listed above and working at a university is beneficial.
  • Fluency in English in speaking and in writing; basic knowledge of Swedish is an advantage (may otherwise be obtained in first two years).

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually; therefore, please indicate your requested salary. Start date immediately.
