The Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 110 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Education is oriented towards geography, geosciences, biology-earth sciences, and environmental protection and environmental management. The main research areas are: Geomorphology and Glaciology; Water, Permafrost and Environmental Systems; Climate Science and Quaternary Geology; and Landscape, Evironment and Geomatics. We offer a stimulating and friendly environment in a very diverse and international department.

Tarfala Research Station (TRS), managed by the Department of Physical Geography, is remotely located in the Tarfala valley at ca 1130 m asl  just east of Kebnekaise and 24 kilometres from the nearest road in Nikkaloukta. The station has accommodation capacity for 40 persons, a fully equipped kitchen, lecture room, sauna, laundry, laboratories and a workshop. Scientists and students visit Tarfala Research Station to study glaciers and the arctic alpine environment. Stockholm university runs a long-term observational program which includes measurements glacier mass balance, glacial hydrology, mountain meteorology, permafrost and vegetation.

Main responsibilities
Kitchen staff is responsible for the kitchen which includes planning, preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for between 10–40 persons as well as cleaning of kitchen and lounge area. Kitchen staff can also get the opportunity to assist with field work. Travel to and from TRS includes a hike of 24 kilometres in mountainous terrain for which good physical condition is required. Baggage exceeding day-pack can be transported to TRS from Nikkaluokta by helicopter, though not necessarily upon the dates of arrival and departure.

The summer field season is divided in to three periods 2022:
Period 1: 1/7 – 26/7 (arrival 30/6, departure 27/7)
Period 2: 25/7 - 23/8 (arrival 24/7, departure 24/8)
Period 3: 22/8 – 16/9 (arrival 21/8, departure 17/9)

You can apply for all three periods, but will not be hired for more than two periods.

Qualification requirements
Minimum age: 18 years.  You have documented experience from working in a commercial kitchen and from cooking healthy and vegetarian food. The staff at TRS is a small group, which is why we require good cooperation skills, flexibility, and responsiveness. Emphasis is placed on personal suitability where we value good attitude, good physique as well as a stable and kind mindset.  Documented experience of ordering supplies from wholesalers is meriting as well as working in similar environments

Terms of employment
Employments are temporary. The salary is 750 SEK per day. The cost of food and accommodation is included, but is subject to benefit taxation. Day of arrival and departure is outside the employment period and does not count as a working day. Travels to and from TRS (usually by train) are included and are booked for you by TRS.
