Infrastructure Engineer for a Quantum Computing System

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 10 Nov 2022

Your work will span and contribute to the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) at Chalmers, the European OpenSuperQPlus collaboration and the NordIQuEst project. The mission is to build a SW stack and infrastructure which helps to process and store internal data of a quantum computing system as well as to help integrate the quantum computing system into a classical high-performance computer (HPC) environment. The position will be hosted by the Quantum Technology Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology. You will get help and supervision with user requirements and high-level system design, but we will trust you to make the call with tools, technologies, and implementation. We encourage both junior and senior engineers to apply.

Major responsibilities
- Python specialist
- SW stack design and implementation
- Code review and documentation
- Interfacing with multiple projects
- Co-designing an HPC+QC ecosystem

About the research group
Activities within the hosting research group involve a broad range of quantum engineering methodologies supporting the mission to build a fully functional 100-qubit quantum computer. A 20-qubit QPU has been already built and the goal is to test use-cases by the end of 2023. Work involves all parts of a full stack, from designing and fabricating the QPU to creating an API for remote access, including work toward integration of HPC and QPU for quantum acceleration. During 2022 we had a successful proof-of-concept connection between Chalmers quantum computer and the LUMI supercomputer in Finland. Other activities also involve designing and implementing algorithms and use cases for optimization and quantum chemistry problems.

About the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology - WACQT
WACQT is a 12-year initiative (2018-2029) aimed to bring Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of Quantum Technology (QT). The four pillars of QT comprise quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum communication and quantum sensing. The Centre is funded mainly by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation with additional contributions from the participating universities and industry. At Chalmers, the focus is on building a superconducting quantum computer and to explore useful applications of quantum computing/simulation.

About OpenSuperQPlus
OpenSuperQPlus (2023-2029) is a Framework Partnership Agreement with the aim to create a competitive full-stack superconducting quantum computing system on the European level. OpenSuperQPlus combines the quantum engineering and technology expertise of multiple universities, RTOs, and SMEs with the highest expertise and strongest track-record to this end in Europe and Associated Countries. The mission is to scale superconducting quantum chip technology to 1000 qubits by 2029. Further focus is building the European community toward developing and deploying scalable, high-performance European quantum computing platforms and capabilities.

About NordIQuEst
NordIQuEst (2022-2024) builds a quantum computing platform and infrastructure customized to the needs of the Nordic region. The project gathers complementary expertise and resources required for establishing this new infrastructure, comprising some of the best quantum expertise globally. The infrastructure will connect two superconducting QPUs and a state-of-the-art dedicated quantum computer simulator to the LUMI leadership-class, pre-exascale supercomputer. NordIQuEst will develop user and computer interfaces, quantum program libraries, training and education events and material, and deliver user support.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is for one to two years. Opportunities for permanent employment as Research Engineer can be possible at the end of the position. There are also possibilities to arrange for doctoral or postdoctoral studies.

Qualifications
- Python language and ecosystem specialist; including multiprocessing and asyncio
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems in a systematic and programmatic way
- Solid proficiency with backend technologies: MongoDB, Redis, REST API
- Experience in code review, adherence to style guidelines, system tests, documentation
- Experience with authentication and authorization with OAuth/JWT
- Git, CI/CD pipelines, Linux server environment
