The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. MEB has epidemiological groups at the forefront of research into cancer screening for breast, prostate and cervical cancer. The department also has strengths in biostatistics. To support the translation of cancer screening research into policy, we are expanding our capacity for health economic evaluations of cancer screening.

The employment as Researcher in health economics is an ongoing position. The Researcher will lead projects, co-supervise PhD students and provide expert guidance in health economics and cancer screening.


Your mission

Our group is investigating the cost-effectiveness of cancer screening. We are looking for someone who is interested in applying their health economic skills to evaluate cancer screening strategies. This is a cross-disciplinary project, with a team that includes expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical medicine and health economics. The main project will be the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of organised prostate cancer testing, which will be led by the applicant.

Other sub-projects will include contributing to: a cost-of-illness study for breast cancer; and a cost-effectiveness analysis for cancer diagnostics using artificial intelligence assisted pathology. Tasks will include: formulating the study plans; writing ethical applications; performing health data analysis for estimation of epidemiological parameters and costs; contributing to microsimulation model extensions; and undertaking the health economic evaluations, including analysing the simulation output and writing manuscripts.


Your profile

A person is eligible to be appointed Research specialist if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence.

The required background is a PhD degree in health economics, preferably with applications to cost-effectiveness analysis in cancer screening. Experience with the following would be meritorious: data analyses of the Swedish health and population registers; analysis and reporting from microsimulation studies; and health economics for prostate cancer testing.

The ideal candidate would have an interest in health economics for prostate cancer testing. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are essential, as the work environment is international. Personal qualities for the role include being independent, structured, performance-oriented and with strong analytical abilities.
