To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The research group
The Johnson lab offers a stimulating, international research environment. We are part of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the world’s leading medical universities. The lab is located in Biomedicum, a state-of-the-art research building on Solna campus. The labs primary focus is on the cellular and tissue response to low oxygen, or hypoxia.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The project is concerned with the role of hypoxia induced metabolites and their roles in the modulation of T cell responses. The responses that the project will in particular focus on are those related to T cell immunotherapy.
The student will take on an independent project with a focus on a few specific metabolites that our group has found influence both molecular responses in T cells and in particular can alter their epigenetic states during activation following antigen recognition. A characterization of these responses and a better understanding of their mechanistic causes will be the chief focus of the doctoral work.
