We are now looking for a doctoral student in textile technology with a focus on digital printing and the fabrication of electrical sensors for physiological signals integrated in smart textiles for sports, fitness, and well-being. The doctoral student will be part of the Textile Material Technology research group, led by Professor Vincent Nierstrasz, and of the research group Textiles and Wearable Sensors for P-Health, led by Professor Fernando Seoane.


Job description

Research will be carried out within the research school of Textiles and Fashion with a basis in the research group Textile Material Technology. In addition, close international collaboration is offered within the DiMO-Next consortium project. This collaboration is established between Sweden and Austria and travel between the countries can be expected. The subject focus is on the use of digital printing, such as inkjet and valve-jet, 3D printing, and the development of methods for textile manufacturing of textile-integrated physiological sensors for applications of smart textiles for sports, fitness, and well-being. 

A full-time doctoral student must devote at least 80% of their time to research studies and doctoral thesis work. Any remaining time, up to 20%, is for departmental duties consisting of teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s level in relevant courses, supervision of degree projects, participation in external projects, and other assignments and/or administration at the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business.

Qualifications

Employment takes place under the condition that the applicant fulfills the requirements and is accepted as a doctoral student. Admission will be with the Textiles and Fashion research school, specialisation in textile technology.

Applicants must have a Master's degree in chemistry, textiles, electrical engineering or similar. Furthermore, good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The position requires someone with good collaboration and initiative-taking qualities, an ability to work independently and in a structured way, as well as the ability to prioritise among work tasks. 


Additional merits
  • Knowledge of physical chemistry, e.g. interface science and rheology.
  • Knowledge of application technologies (like digital printing) and development of inkjet/vault inks for textiles.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering.
  • knowledge of textile manufacturing methods and textile materials.

About the employment

Type of employment: Doctoral studentship employment is conducted in accordance with the regulations outlined in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  If departmental duties are included, the doctoral education period is extended by a corresponding degree, however with a maximum of five years. The first employment period covers one year and is normally renewed by one year at a time.
