Doctoral position in Medical Science
Project title: Deep profiling of tau aggregates in Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies
The Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry is located at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. At the Department research is conducted on human behaviour, neuropsychiatric processes as well as psychiatric treatment and diagnosis in close collaboration with Västra Götaland region and a number of international partners. We participate in the undergraduate programmes in Medicine and within The National Research School in Psychiatry/Southwest Sweden. At the Department there are some 15 research groups and four research centers.

The PhD education in Medical Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. Project: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and it is estimated that more than 100,000 people are affected in Sweden. Research over the last 30 years has shown that the pathological changes in the brain can be attributed to different protein aggregates composed of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau protein in the form of plaques and tangles, respectively. Studies have shown that in AD there is a very strong association between tau aggregates and Aβ-containing plaques. However, neither the mechanism behind tau aggregation nor the actual connection between Aβ and tau is currently known. It is not known how these processes lead to AD symptoms or what triggers the disease. Moreover, tau aggregation without Aβ pathology can occur in other neurodegenerative diseases, commonly called primary tauopathies. Biochemical tests (biomarkers) have received increasing attention, as they are valuable tools in clinical studies to better understand the progression of the disease, to monitor the effectiveness of new drugs, and to help in diagnosing the disease at an early stage in which disease-modifying drugs have optimal effects. Suitable methods to identify and measure such biomarkers are immunoassays and mass spectrometry (MS). The project aim is to reveal the pathological progression of tau protein in AD as well as other tauopathies. In particular, the project aims at finding links between the two major brain changes in AD; extracellular Aβ-plaques and intraneuronal tau tangles, and to investigate if tau accumulations associated with Aβ-plaques are different in regards to their molecular composition compared with tau accumulations formed independently.
The research group is a favourable composition for etiopathogenetic and translational research in the field of Alzheimer's and other brain diseases, with both doctors and biochemists (see https://www.gu.se/en/research/neurochemical-pathophysiology-and-diagnostics ). The laboratory is well equipped, with a broad range of instruments for protein chemistry, proteomics, and immunoassays. We co-operate with several academic research groups, nationally and internationally, as well as with industrial partners
We are looking for a PhD candidate with good biochemical knowledge and experience in using immunoassays and mass spectrometry (high resolution LC-MS/MS). The work requires good interaction and communication skills and that you are careful and methodical. To be successful, the candidate will need to have a strong commitment and a positive approach, being able to work in an interdisciplinary group as well as independently towards the goals expressed in the project plans. Of great importance is personal suitability.
Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree. As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.
Education at third-cycle level requires general eligibility and specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.
The general eligibility requirements for education at third-cycle level are:
1. having completed a degree at second-cycle level, or
2. the fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or
3. the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.
Specific entry requirements for this subject, according to the general syllabus, are:
having completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
The selection of applicants who are considered to have the ability required to benefit from the study programme and who meet the general and specific eligibility requirements are assessed based on the following documented qualifications:
- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields
- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology
- scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like.
Once you have been admitted for education at third-cycle level, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg. The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100. Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time. A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at third-cycle level for four years.
