Doctoral position in Health Care Sciences 

Project title: Care for healthcare – Explorations of work-related health in the shift towards person-centred integrated care

The Department of Life context and health promotion is located at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

The doctoral student within this project will be part of the research school SHIFT CARE - Swedish research school in Integrated CARE for Future Teachers. SHIFT CARE is a national research school jointly run by four universities: University of Gothenburg, University of Borås, University of Skövde and University West, which is now recruiting several PhD students. SHIFT CARE is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is the first research school in Sweden with a focus on knowledge development that, through learning and research, supports the transition to Integrated care for people of different ages with complex care needs. A cornerstone is to prepare doctoral students to become active in education after graduation, with a focus on integrated care, at universities and within different healthcare levels. Doctoral students in the research school will follow the university’s general study plan. The research school’s programme consists of two mandatory courses, optional courses, seminars, retreats, and the opportunity for international internship exchange, which runs parallel to the regular PhD programme. The PhD education in Health Care Sciences comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. Project: The focus of PhD project is the shift towards person-centred integrated healthcare. Ethical stress, high workload and job dissatisfaction may lead to difficulties recruiting and retaining health professionals in hospitals, primary care and municipal health and social care. A person-centred approach to health and social care has the potential to improve the work environment and work-related health among health, and there is a lack of knowledge on how the shift towards person-centred integrated care affects health professionals across healthcare settings. The overarching aim with this project is therefore to follow, describe and evaluate the meaning of a person-centred approach for work-related health and job satisfaction among health professionals in hospital, primary care and municipal health and social care. In the project, both quantitative and qualitative methods will be used.

Good collaboration skills as well as ability to plan and complete work tasks independently are desirable. Good verbal and written communication skills in both Swedish and English is necessary. The project requires that the doctoral student will be able to collect data and conduct text analyses in Swedish.

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree. As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.    

Education at third-cycle level requires general eligibility and specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.  

The general eligibility requirements for education at third-cycle level are:    
1. having completed a degree at second-cycle level, or
2. the fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or  
3. the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.  
 
Specific entry requirements for this subject, according to the general syllabus, are: 
having completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.    

The selection of applicants who are considered to have the ability required to benefit from the study programme and who meet the general and specific eligibility requirements are assessed based on the following documented qualifications:
- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields
- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology
- scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. 

Documented experience of working close to patients in the field/s relevant to the research project is meritourious, as is experience of scientific work and research relevant to the research project. Documented experience in teaching and/or supervision is desirable.    

Once you have been admitted for education at third-cycle level, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg. The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100. Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time. A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at third-cycle level for four years.

The University applies a local agreement on salaries for doctoral students.
