KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Third-cycle subject: Technology and learning
Education is about the future but who is empowered to design the education of the future? Critical researchers argue that commercial companies, politicians, managers, and technological determinism drive the development of future education, while students, educators and researchers have limited influence. In this project, we will work with fiction/stories (so-called "education/social science fiction") as a method to investigate different possible ways that education could look like in the future, while at the same time putting taken-for-granted assumptions under critical scrutiny. The fiction that is developed is based on studies of, for example, students’ and educators’ hopes and fears. The thesis project can be directed towards the futures of school and/or the futures of higher education. The project is carried out within the research group described below, which means that special focus should be on the role of digital technologies.
The research group Digital learning investigates how technology can support education and learning. The research group’s strength is that we bring together researchers and doctoral students who have competence in both technology and pedagogy. The doctoral student will be affiliated to GRADEresearch, which is a national research school in digital technologies in education.
Supervision: Professor Stefan Hrastinski is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
