The Unit of Epidemiology conducts research to improve the understanding of how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the risk and prognosis of diseases, particularly cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Strong emphasis is put on the development of epidemiological theory and methods. Our research group currently runs a project about the ageing population. The overall aims of this project are to investigate causes for the pronounced reduction in old age mortality during the previous decades and centuries and to project future developments in health and disease burden in an ageing population. We are a multidisciplinary team primarily working with data from Swedish population registers and combine methods and knowledge from epidemiology, demography, and sociology. More information can be found at http://ki.se/en/imm/the-ageing-population.
We are now looking for a doctoral student for the upcoming 4 years with start in September 2017.
The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
This doctoral education project aims at describing and understanding trends in mortality, morbidity, and life expectancy among the old in Sweden. It will also include modelling future projections of incidence and prevalence of common diseases among the old, particularly cardiovascular diseases. The project is based on large-scale data from Swedish population registers. The doctoral student will use demographic and epidemiologic methods and work independently with the design of quantitative studies and advanced statistical analyses. Supervision will be provided by both epidemiologists and demographers.
