The Department of Special Collections is responsible for acquiring, storing, and making available the library’s cultural heritage materials, i.e., manuscripts, music materials, maps, pictures, old prints, and other printed collections that are particularly worthy of preservation. The Department’s remit also includes the library’s overall work with exhibits, visits, and displays.

Uppsala University Library’s physical collection is in constant need of preservation, both reference books and material in circulation. We are now looking to expand our preservation department with a skilled bookbinder.

Duties
You will primarily work with 19th and 20th century materials in reference collections and in circulation, with focus on structural and surface repairs or rebinding of volumes made of parchment, leather, cloth and paper. You will be expected to construct boxes and other enclosures.

You will also contribute to work with the library’s exhibitions and loans to external parties. Your duties will include maintenance of equipment and machines, written and visual documentation in databases of conducted work, and sharing subject knowledge in social media and on internal channels.

Heavy lifting may be necessary. Certain task (e.g., those involving contact with dust, dirt and mildew or using equipment) require the use of personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Formal training as a bookbinder, with a certificate or diploma from a recognized institute
  • At least two years of experience working as a bookbinder
  • Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English.

Useful skills 

  • IT skills, e.g., Office and software for reporting measures taken
  • Experience of using a respirator and other personal protective equipment
  • Good communication skills in Swedish, both in writing and orally.

Major emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. You are thorough and structured, and you take responsibility for your work. You have a well-developed ability to plan, prioritise and produce high-quality work within given timeframes. The position requires that you are self-motivated and can work independently while also being able to collaborate with others. You have good oral communication skills.
