The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The Murrell lab, at MTC, Karolinska institutet, is a mixed computational and experimental lab working at the intersection of computational biology, virology, immunology, and evolution. Our current projects involve building models of molecular evolution, and various applications of deep learning.


Your mission

The role as a Bioinformatician  will include contributing to, creating, and maintaining Julia codebases and packages. The role will also contain computational experimentation, comparing methods, etc.


Your profile

Requirements for the position:

  • Demonstrable expertise in programming and methods development in computational biology, especially related to topics in sequence alignment, protein structure representation and manipulation, and visualization.
  • Demonstrable high-level expertise with the Julia language, specifically in a computational biology setting, with multiple publicly available Julia packages that you have created and maintain.
  • Experience with GPU computing in Julia, including through interfaces like Flux.jl, and writing custom CUDA kernels.
  • Familiarity with concepts in basic probability theory, geometry, and linear algebra
  • Ability to communicate (spoken and written) clearly in English.

Expertise in Julia will be assessed via a technical programming test.
