The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological environment in Sweden. It consists of seven sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution and Centre of Pelaeogenetics. Both the research and the education at the Department comprise different areas and time periods.
We are seeking a bioinformatician to support the archaeogenetic research group at Centre of Paleogenetics (CPG). The research group is looking for someone who can provide bioinformatic support on genomic data generated using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies. The Department of Archaeology and Classic Studies (ACS) will be the employing department.
Main responsibilities
The main task consists of handling DNA sequence data from historical and prehistorical remains of humans. The analysis includes quality controls, mapping data to reference genomes, determination if DNA data is of ancient origin, and determination of species and sex. We presently run two workflows in the archaeogenetic group at CPG (one aimed at mapping human data and one aimed at mapping microbial data), and much of the work will be related to these two pipelines. Another task is to support the group in downstream analyses (ancestry, kinship, traits and microorganisms). The bioinformatician is also responsible for updating and developing analysis tools and data management systems and contributes to writing user reports. The bioinformatician is expected to participate in the Department’s and the facility’s other activities and is part of an archaeogenetic research team and also CPG.
Qualification requirements
We are looking for a person with a master exam in a relevant subject (bioinformatics, population genetics, archaeogenetics) and with focus on DNA data analysis. The person needs to have documented experience of genomics, ancient DNA, and NGS generated data. Experience with working with population genetics, ancient human DNA, and also development of tools for analysis of DNA data are merits. Excellent command of English in writing and speech is required. Personal qualities such as ability to plan and organize your work, work in a team, taking responsibility and being meticulous is very important.
