Subjec area

The subject area of AI and the development of digital solutions for the agricultural sector are of strategic importance for the future. The senior lecturer is expected to develop, validate and transfer AI / sensor-driven solutions in animal and plant production and to develop new scientific methods that contribute to the development of the research area innovation-driven livestock production with a focus on farm environment,  animal health and welfare.


Duties

The employment will include close collaboration within the SLU-based center formation SustAinimal, which has the task of collaborating to increase knowledge about the role of food-producing animals in the transition to a resilient, sustainable and profitable food system in Sweden. More specifically, the tasks will involve leading a project on the development of sensor-based tools for monitoring health and welfare of cattle on natural pastures.

 Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the department’s research and education (from bachelor's to doctoral level) by

  • seeking external research funding and initiation of research within the subject area and production of scientific publications
  • active participation in teaching, both practical and theoretical, including supervision and examination

Qualifications

The candidate must:

  • Have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject no older than five years before the end of the application period,
  • Be scientifically skilled in both animal science and technology related to AI
  • Have documented competence in at least one programming language (eg Python, R, Matlab)
  • Have documented experience of developing sensor / data-driven solutions for the livestock sector
  • Be pedagogically skilled in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Have a strong ability to communicate in both written and spoken English and Swedish.

Assessment criteria

The main emphasis in the assessment of applications for the position as Associate Senior Lecturer will be placed on scientific skills. The next aspect assessed will be the applicant’s ability to develop an independent research profile within the relevant research area, and the ability to meet the requirements for promotion to a position as Senior Lecturer by the end of the Associate Senior lectureship.

Emphasis will also be placed on experience and competence in the subject specialization. Special emphasis will also be placed on collaborative experience.

When assessing scientific skill, the following are taken into account:

own research vision, documented ability to develop research in the subject, and experience from interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research

When assessing pedagogical skills, the following are taken into account:

experience of teaching as well as the ability to integrate research, practice and a scientific approach in teaching

When assessing other skills the following are taken into account;

Practical experience of the profession, project management skills, and ability to collaborate with external stakeholders and society. Experience of analysis of large amounts of data is meritorious.

Form of Employment:

The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
