The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science at the Faculty of Arts has about 100 staff members and a student body corresponding to about 350 full-time equivalents. It is home to a large number of national and international research projects and offers courses and degree programs for philosophers, logicians, linguists, language technologists, theorists of science, historians of philosophy, philologists and philosophy teachers. The Department also arranges doctoral education and development work in its various academic domains.

The Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) is based in FLoV at the University of Gothenburg, and is funded by a 10 year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). CLASP is devoted to research and advanced training in the application of probabilistic modelling and machine learning methods to core issues in linguistic theory and cognition. It also addresses topics in dialogue and linguistic interaction. For a description of CLASP see https://www.gu.se/en/clasp

Subject area description

Computational linguistics is a subject with the right to confer university degrees on second and third cycle level. Second cycle education is carried out in the Master in Language Technology (MLT) programme, and third cycle teaching is carried out within CLASP.

For a description of MLT, see https://www.gu.se/en/study-gothenburg/master-in-language-technology-one-year-or-two-years-h2mlt

The successful candidate is expected to devote at least half of their time in research associated with one of CLASP’s core areas from a Computational Linguistics perspective, and the rest in administration and teaching, mainly within the Master's program in Language Technology, which is taught in English.

The successful candidate will be a full member of the research teams working at CLASP and will be expected to take part in the design and implementation of research projects on an ongoing basis. More specifically, people in CLASP are currently conducting research in linguistics and computational linguistics using ideas from the following research areas:

  • Type Theory (or logics) and probability
  • Machine Learning including Deep Learning and Neural Networks
  • Theorem Proving and Bayesian Reasoning
  • Formal Models of Dialogue and Linguistic Interaction
  • Combining logical and Machine Learning/Deep Learning approaches
  • Models combining language and perception
  • Psycho- and neurolinguistically informed approaches to linguistic processing

Applicants with interests in these or related domains are encouraged to apply.

The associate senior lecturer will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to obtain qualifications that entitle them to another teaching position which sets higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, §12 a of the The Higher Education Ordinance .). The employment as associate senior lecturer is described in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg .

The applicant is expected to have expertise in one of CLASP’s core research areas from a computational linguistics perspective, and to have conducted research in this area. Applicants who are well acquainted with the issues related to the CLASP's main research areas will be given priority. Weight will also be given to proven interpersonal skills and the ability to plan and organize research and to communicate their own research.

Applicants are expected to have proven skills and experience in the teaching of computational linguistics. The ability to teach in the core areas of linguistics (such as syntax and formal semantics) is also desirable.

During the employment period, the assistant senior lecturer may apply to be promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer. The assessment is based on demonstrated progression in terms of scientific and pedagogical skills, where the applicant must be able to demonstrate:

  • scientific qualifications that both quantitatively and qualitatively significantly exceed what is required for a doctoral degree
  • ability to independently initiate and conduct research of high scientific quality, published in international journals and conference proceedings
  • evidence of active and independently obtaining external funding for research activities
