The Department of Physics is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees, of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

Experimental atomic, molecular and cluster physics.

Subject description
Experimental studies of the fundamental properties of ions and their reactions in the gas phase.

Main responsibilities
Research, teaching and supervision.

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for the position as associate professor, the applicant must have demonstrated good teaching skills and have a doctoral degree, or equivalent research expertise, of relevance to the subject area and the main responsibilities of the position.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research and teaching skills. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

In the case of otherwise similar qualifications, the following criteria will be used to distinguish between candidates:

  • Ability to develop a research program in which in-house experiments is a central component.
  • Experience of modelling and development of analysis methods within the research area.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.

Additional information
* Swedish “universitetslektor”; tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (US).

Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be able to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require good command of Swedish within a couple of years of employment.

The national research facility, DESIREE (Double ElectroStatic Ion-Ring ExpEriment https://www.desiree-infrastructure.com/ ) has been developed and is operated at the Physics Department of Stockholm University. The facility enables experimental studies within the research area of this announcement by means of one or two stored beams of positive and/or negative ions of atoms, molecules and clusters. The successful candidate will be expected to develop their own research program at Stockholm University, which may include studies of ion reactions, atom, molecule, and cluster dynamics and spectroscopy at DESIREE and/or development of state-of-the-art instrumentation and stand-alone experiments.
