Deadline: 15 Feb 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-4252-23

at the Department of Physics . Closing date: 15 February 2024.

The Department of Physics is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees, of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

Members of the department are also part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics (OKC) , a rich scientific environment that comprises more than a hundred researchers working in both theory and experiment.

Subject
Experimental astroparticle physics with focus on astrophysical neutrinos

Subject description
The subject area relates to the use of, and instrumental development for, large-volume neutrino experiments necessary to detect high-energy neutrinos, either directly from galactic and extragalactic sources or produced by cosmic rays in the atmosphere.

Main responsibilities
Research, teaching and supervision.

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for the position as associate professor, the applicant must have demonstrated good teaching skills and have a doctoral degree, or equivalent research expertise, of relevance to the subject area and the main responsibilities of the position.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research and teaching skills. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

In the case of otherwise similar qualifications, the following criteria will be used to distinguish between candidates:

  • the potential to collaborate on scientific activities at the Physics Department
  • the ability to develop and lead activities in the international IceCube Collaboration

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.

Additional information
Sweden--through the participation of Stockholm University, Uppsala University, and funding from the Swedish Research Council--is a member of the international IceCube Collaboration which operates the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole.  Stockholm University researchers are engaged in both the analysis of current data from IceCube and the construction of the IceCube Upgrade and the next generation neutrino observatory IceCube-Gen2. The latter will include both a large expansion of the deep-ice optical sensor array of present IceCube, and a shallow-ice array based on novel radio-detection techniques in development.

Female applicants are particularly welcome, as most associate professors at the department are men.

* Swedish “universitetslektor”; tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (US).
