Deadline: 31 Jan 2022

The Department of Molecular Biology is looking for an Associate Professor in the field of eukaryotic molecular genetics. The employee will conduct independent research, actively participate in postgraduate education and teach the subject area. We welcome your application no later than January 31, 2022.

Duties

The employment assignments relate to research and teaching in the field of eukaryotic molecular genetics. The applicant shall conduct independent research and education at the doctoral level in molecular genetics with a focus on molecular or cellular processes in eukaryotic model systems, based on hypothesis-driven research with significant experimental elements, which may include quantitative methods.

The applicant will be a representative for the subject area and teach and examine at undergraduate and advanced level within eukaryotic molecular genetics. Teaching duties may also apply to responsibility for the development of courses related to the subject, as well as responsibility for educational programs. The tasks may also include administrative and organizational tasks within the department and the faculty.

For a non-Swedish speaking successful applicant, they are expected to acquire spoken Swedish to an adequate level within a three-year period in order to, for example, be able to participate in administrative planning within the faculty.

Eligibility requirements

A person shall be qualified for appointment as associate professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regard to the subject area of the appointment and its associated duties.

Documented experience of modern molecular biology methods for addressing research questions in the subject area is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

When selecting applicants for the position, the following weighting of each skill aspect shall apply:

Scientific skill 70%, pedagogical skill 20%, administrative skill, and skill to lead and develop activities and staff at the university, 10%. In addition, the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work will be taken into account.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

The degree of scientific skill will primarily be assessed on the basis of the ability to plan and lead research and education at research level.

Particular emphasis will be placed on independent research efforts in eukaryotic molecular genetics with a focus on molecular or cellular processes in eukaryotic genetic model systems, as well as the timeliness, quality and originality of scientific research efforts.

Great emphasis is placed on scientific work published in internationally reputable scientific journals, in which the applicant has played a prominent role, as well as the ability to successfully compete for external research funding.

Applicants with a research profile that is linked to and / or complements the department's research activities are given priority. The Department of Molecular Biology lacks infrastructure for research specialisation in plant biology, as this is available at other departments at Umeå University.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical skills should refer to the subject area eukaryotic molecular genetics at different levels of education. Documented good ability to be responsible for, plan, implement and evaluate teaching as well as supervision and examination is a merit.

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Administrative skills as well as skills to lead and develop activities and staff at the university

Administrative skills refer to the ability to lead and initiate research activities as well as the ability to carry out administrative tasks at department and faculty level.

  • A personal cover letter, including contact details, where you briefly describe how you meet the specified requirements (max 2 pages)
  • Copies of relevant university degrees and diplomas
  • Copies of five research publications relevant to the position, numbered according to the publication list
  • Attachments to a pedagogical portfolio (see p. 3.5 in Umu application template)
  • CV/Umu application template
Fill in the UmU application template (word) . Submit it attached to your application in the Varbi system as your CV. Following information must be provided in the application form:
    • basic information
    • an account of research experience (including a list of articles published and a brief research plan)
    • an account of pedagogical experience and activities
    • an account of experiences of developing and managing activities and staff
    • an account of experiences regarding interacting with the surrounding society and popularizing science
    • references, including contact details
  • See instructions for what to include in the application, as well as how to describe scientific and educational activities (pdf)
