LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY

hereby advertises a position as

Assistant professor in Synthetic Chemistry with specialization in synthesis of value-added chemicals from forest-based raw materials

Description of the subject area

A Fellow position, an Assistant Professor, is now being announced within the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC), a program funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. This position relates to research and teaching in the field of forest-based materials with a focus on synthesis of value-added chemicals with placement at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE) at Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping, Linköping University. Aided by a highly competitive starting package that includes two PhD students, access to state-of-the-art facilities, additional funds for e.g. a post-doc and small equipment, and a strong collaborative environment, the successful applicant is expected to establish and maintain top-quality independent research related to the development of new functional materials from forest-based raw materials beyond the current state-of-the-art. Your background includes research in synthesis of value-added chemicals and functional materials from renewable feedstock, including but not limited to development of (bio)catalysts, microbial biosynthesis or functionalization of forest-based materials.

At LOE, we explore electronic and optical properties of organic materials and organic-inorganic hybrid systems. Of particular interest is the development of new components and system concepts for applications in energy, internet-of-things, health and biology. Our research includes synthesis, materials science, theory, and studies of electronic and photonic components and systems, ranging from fundamental research to the commercialization of research findings. LOE currently includes about 130 researchers and is divided into twelve research groups performing research on areas spanning from organic nanoelectronics and printed electronics to organic bioelectronics, energy materials, nanooptics, and electronic plants. The successful candidate will complement and expand our activities in research based on design and development of new functional materials and devices from forest-based raw materials beyond the current state-of-the-art.

Duties

An assistant professor´s duties may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.

First and foremost, you are expected to establish and lead top-quality research activities in the selected area, including supervision of PhD students and acquisition of external funding.

You are active in the research community, will participate in the department’s activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results via academic publications and contribute to attracting external research funding.

The position as a WWSC Fellow gives you the opportunity to be active in the WWSC program regarding conferences, workshops and networking. The position may also involve leading multi-partnership projects (nationally and internationally) and participating in the management of activities.

As a WWSC Fellow and assistant professor in Synthetic Chemistry, you must be able to teach at first and second cycle level in Swedish and/or English, as well as supervise students in the Faculty of Engineering’s various programs. The work may include the design and responsibility of courses.

You are expected to actively contribute to the development of LOE as well as our university as a whole, and we would like you to participate and show interest in management assignments and/or collaborations outside academia.

You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of educational and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to professional development, collegial working methods and social community. You are present and active in order to perform your tasks in the best way and thrive in our research environment.

For this position, the language of instruction will be Swedish and/or English.

Employment as an assistant professor

The purpose of the employment as an assistant professor is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the scientific and teaching qualifications required for employment as senior lecturer.

Qualifications

To be qualified for this position, the applicant needs to have received a Degree of Doctor or have the equivalent academic expertise.

Priority shall be given to a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent academic expertise no more than five years before the deadline for applying for the employment as assistant professor. A person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent expertise at a previous date may, however, be considered in special circumstances. Special circumstances can be sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.

Grounds for assessment

As grounds for assessment when appointing a research fellow, the level of proficiency required to qualify for the appointment shall apply.

For this position special weight is given to scholarly proficiency, followed by teaching proficiency, in turn followed by remaining proficiencies which should be considered equally.

Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through: original research resulting in publication, through planning and managing research and PhD courses and study programmes and through the ability to obtain research grants. Scholarly proficiency can also be demonstrated through the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration with other teachers and through the ability to provide information about research. For this position, scholarly proficiency must be demonstrated by a strong documented expertise in the research and development of green synthetic chemistry and documented experience in (bio)catalysis, microbial biosynthesis or functionalization of forest-based materials.

Teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to convey relevant knowledge and skills, to stimulate students such that they drive their own learning process, to create engagement and interest in the subject area, and the ability to structure and organise both the content and forms of work in relation to the goals of the subject area.
