Assistant Professor in Low temperature geochemistry

Updated: 3 months ago
Deadline: 02 Dec 2024

The Department of Geological Sciences (IGV)  is one of three departments within the Section for Geo and Environmental Sciences at Stockholm University's Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 70 employees, including around 10 technical administrative staff and about 15 PhD students. Its activities span three areas: geology, geochemistry, and marine geoscience, encompassing both research and teaching. Teaching is conducted both on campus and through distance learning, with a total of approximately 1000 students studying at IGV per year. The research activities primarily involve chemical and isotope analyses on various materials such as sediments, rocks/minerals, soil samples, gases/atmosphere, and water. The department is well-equipped with analytical resources . Strong collaborations exist with the Baltic Sea Centre and the department is also part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research .

The department manages two new national research infrastructures: one for the examination of sediments using, among other methods, computer tomography, and another involving a high-quality instrument (ULTRA HR-IRMS) with significant potential for studying element cycles, formation temperatures, and process understanding through the analysis of clumped isotopes.

Subject
Low temperature geochemistry

Subject description
Low temperature geochemistry is the study of the chemical composition, distribution, and transformation of elements and compounds in near-surface environments on Earth, as well as their interactions with the atmosphere and hydrosphere at moderate temperatures.

Main responsibilities
Research and in addition some teaching and supervision.

Qualification requirements
To qualify for the position as assistant professor, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country. In the first instance, an applicant should be considered who has received such a degree no more than five years before the deadline for applications. However, an applicant who has received such a degree earlier may be considered under special circumstances.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Teaching skills will also be considered. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

When qualifications are otherwise comparable, candidates will be differentiated based on the following criteria:
- ability to collaborate with researchers from the department's geochemistry group
- proficiency in teaching within the fields of geochemistry and isotope geochemistry

Additional information
For this tenure track position, the assistant professor is employed until further notice, but no longer than six years. The contract may be extended to a maximum of eight years under special circumstances, such as due to sick leave or parental leave.
An assistant professor may, on application, be promoted to a permanent position as associate professor. Specific criteria for promotion from assistant professor to associate professor have been established by the Faculty of Science .
An application for promotion to associate professor should be submitted to the faculty at least nine months before the appointment as assistant professor expires.  This position (in Swedish, “biträdande lektor”) is a tenure track position, and the qualification requirements and terms of employment are regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2017:844).

The Geochemistry Group conducts studies in areas related to element cycles and climate change, and uses isotopic analyses as well as biogeochemical analyses in the research.

Female applicants are particularly welcome, as most teachers within the research environment are men. Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
