Description of the subject area
The field of research is focused on understanding brain development and injury in newborns and evaluating novel therapies to protect the newborn brain. Our group focuses on the questions 1. what mediates the risk to develop neonatal brain injury? 2. what are the long-term consequences? 3. studies on molecular details of perinatal brain injury and novel therapies using experimental models.

Duties
An Assistant professor´s duties may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels. The pedagogic approach of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences stresses learner-driven education.

The PI Professor Ulrika Ådén is highly internationally recognized in the field of neonatal medicine and neuroscience, with publications in the world leading journals of pediatrics and neuroscience. She has led and completed several projects of similar design as in this now planned and has supervised 10 PhD students and 10 postdocs before. She is now establishing a new well financed group at LiU where the plan is to recruit 2 post docs and 1 PhD student for the experimental group in addition to the current position.

The tasks for the holder of this position will be to build up an experimental unit in perinatal neuroscience together with Ulrika Ådén. To set up animal models, in vitro models, to supervise students, to coordinate the lab and to recruit group members together with the PI.

The projects involve small animal surgery, in vitro models molecular and immunohistochemical analysis of brain parenchymal cells and uses state-of-the art imaging, RNA seq, omics analysis etc. The candidate will work in a highly-productive scientific environment and is expected to set up techniques, manage the lab together with the PI and supervise postdoctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate will receive comprehensive mentoring in research and grant writing, leadership and management and must be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and committed team player with an outstanding work ethic.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in a relevant field and a relevant post doc experience. You should also have experience from animal models in perinatal neuroscience and experience of lab supervision at graduate and undergraduate level. Knowledge of basic cellular and molecular biology methodology as well as histochemical methodologies is required. You should also have good knowledge in literature search and scientific writing, and you also need to be good at Microsoft office and statistical program. Cell models for perinatal brain injury, behavior in mice and transgenic mice models are meriting. Experience of bioinformatics and omics analysis is also considered a merit.

Teaching in the education programs at the Medical Faculty will also be a part of the tasks for this position. Teaching can include supervising PhD students and undergraduate students, leading groups in learner-driven education, giving lectures or practical laboratory teaching depending on your previous experience and knowledge.

For this position, the language of instruction will be English.
Employment as an assistant professor
The purpose of the employment as an assistant professor is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the scientific and teaching qualifications required for employment as senior lecturer.

Qualifications
An applicant who has received a Degree of Doctor or has the equivalent academic expertise shall be qualified for this appointment.

Priority shall be given to a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent academic expertise no more than five years before the deadline for applications for employment as research fellow. A person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent expertise at a previous date may, however, be considered in special circumstances. Special circumstances are here used to describe sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.

Grounds for assessment
As grounds for assessment when appointing an Assistant professor, the level of proficiency required to qualify for the appointment shall apply.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching proficiency as to other conditions of eligibility.

For this position special weight is given to scholarly proficiency, followed by teaching proficiency, in turn followed by remaining proficiencies which should be considered equally.

Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through: original research resulting in publication, through planning and managing research and third-cycle courses and study programmes and through the ability to obtain research grants Scholarly proficiency can also be demonstrated through the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration with other teachers and through the ability to provide information about research.

Teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to convey relevant knowledge and skills, to stimulate students such that they drive their own learning process, to create engagement and interest in the subject area, and the ability to structure and organise both the content and forms of work in relation to the goals of the subject area. In addition, the teaching proficiency must have been demonstrated through the ability to contribute to the development and renewal of education and the ability to reflect on their own attitude to education and the results of their work.

Administrative proficiency and leadership must have been demonstrated through the ability to plan, organise and develop activities and personnel.

Collaboration within research is demonstrated by the ability to disseminate, make accessible and benefit from research through the production and dissemination of popular scientific material, collaborative projects with external non-academic actors, commissioned consulting as expert, mobility projects, commercialisation, and activities undertaken within the framework of permitted secondary employment.

The applicant should show an ability to teach in English.

Appointment procedure
The position will be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University on the advice of the Appointments Board. A letter of intent will be required of the applicants who make the short list for the position.
Form of employment
An Assistant professor may be employed until further notice, for a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years, as determined by the institution of higher education before the employment begins. The employment may be renewed, by a maximum period of two years, if, as a consequence of sick absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the assistant professor, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.
The length of employment for this position is 4 years.
An assistant professor shall, after application, be promoted to Associate professor if he/she is qualified for employment as Associate professor and has been assessed following a test to be suitable for such employment according to the grounds for assessment that the institution of higher education has determined. The grounds for assessment are stated in the Rules of Appointment of Linköping University, p 5.2 (LiU-2021-03268). 

As additional grounds for assessment the following criteria will be considered: Demonstration of independent research resulting in high quality publications with senior authorship; Demonstration of ability to obtain external research funding; Ongoing supervision of PhD students (main or co-supervisor); sufficient proficiency in Swedish to be able to take part in teaching in Swedish.
