Most of the research at the department is conducted under the theme “Equality of Opportunity and Big Data Analysis” which is oriented towards applied microeconomics (e.g., public, labor, and micro economics) and statistical learning. This hiring is part of a broader strategy of the department to develop this research group to a new leading research environment for applied economics, statistics and policy analysis.

Subject area for the post: Economics
Employment location: Växjö. The main part of the tasks will be fulfilled at the placement location, but certain duties may be carried out elsewhere at the University.

Scope of employment This is a full-time position (100%) for four years. The appointment may be renewed, however for no longer than a total of two years, if more time is required to fulfil the purpose of the appointment because of sick leave, parental leave, or other specific reasons. After application for promotion, the Assistant Professor shall be examined for promotion to senior lecturer and a full-time employment, according to the Higher Education Ordinance (HF 4 kap 12 a§), Ordinance (SFS 2017:844).

Start of the employment: By agreement.

Job description: The purpose of the position is to give the employee the opportunity to develop his/her independence as a researcher and to gain scientific and pedagogical qualifications in order to meet the requirements for a position as a senior lecturer. The content of the position is split between research (50%) and teaching (50%). The teaching is in the area of applied microeconomics (e.g., public, labor, and micro economics). Some of the teaching is expected to be in Swedish.

Required qualifications:

To be considered for the position, the applicant must have obtained his/her PhD in economics, or in other ways have acquired the equivalent scientific skills. Primary consideration will be given to applicants who have obtained their PhDs or acquired the equivalent competence no longer than five years before the expiration of the application period. Qualification for this position also requires experience in research and teaching in topics related the areas of applied microeconomics (e.g., public, labor and micro economics) and equality of opportunity. The candidate is also expected to have experience with modern econometric tools for policy evaluation applied to big data, including applied machine learning.

Assessment criteria In the overall assessment of competence, the highest weight is given to an assessment of the applicant's potential to publish in high-ranked journals and documented ability to teach. High weight is attached for documented ability to cooperate with colleagues. Some weight is attached to administrative skills, the ability to cooperate with society and inform about research and teaching, as well as academic leadership and international experience.

Other criteria: Proven ability to write applications for external research grants. Proficiency in the Swedish language is desired.

Promotion criteria An assistant professor (biträdande lektor) shall, upon application, be promoted to senior lecturer, if he or she meets pre-established criteria. Such promotion shall entail a permanent appointment as a lecturer. A prerequisite for a promotion is that there is an operational need (verksamhetsbehov) in the subject in question.

For promotion to senior lecturer and a permanent full-time employment, the following criteria will specifically be assessed in addition to the general eligibility requirements for a senior lecturer:

  • High quality in research through publication in high quality peer reviewed, international journals
  • High quality in teaching
  • Independency as a researcher
  • Ability to take a leading role in applications for research funding
  • Collaboration with other researchers and surrounding society
  • Significant research output during the contract period
  • Contributions to the department work environment

Application for promotion must be made no later than 6 months before the end of the employment period as assistant professor, but no earlier than 12 months before.
