The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The department hosts a dynamic research milieu and is internationally oriented. We are seeking to fill:
- One general PhD position in peace and conflict research
The applicant shall submit a project plan with a proposed PhD theme related to peace and conflict research - One PhD position with a focus on international water cooperation, natural disasters and/or climate change. The PhD candidate will be part of the Research School on International Water Cooperation as well as the Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS). The PhD position will be placed at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR). The successful candidate is expected to participate in and contribute to the research milieus at DPCR, the International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC) and CNDS.
The overarching purpose of the Research School of the UNESCO Category II International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC) is to develop knowledge on water cooperation in its broadest sense with a primary focus on water for peace and development (https://siwi.org/international-centre-for-water-cooperation/ ). The Research School aims to critically analyse the linkage between water sharing and international conflict and cooperation, and thereby improve the understanding of the mechanisms by which water sharing can act as a catalyst for peace.
The Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS) is a national center for research on natural hazards and risks that brings together social, engineering and earth scientists from different departments at Uppsala University, Swedish Defence University, and Karlstad University (https://www.cnds.se ). The research conducted at CNDS aims to improve the ability to prevent and deal with risks in society by raising awareness of the dynamics and consequences of natural hazards.
The successful candidate will pursue a project which combines research on 1) international water cooperation, 2) natural disasters, and/or climate change, and 3) peace and conflict. The successful candidate is free to define and develop their project idea within these parameters, and shall submit a project plan on this topic.
Work description
PhD candidates primarily focus on their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department.
Qualifications
Employment as a PhD candidate requires acceptance into the DPCR’s PhD program, which is decided through an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the program. 1) a completed application form for doctoral studies
2) a short personal letter (1-2 pages)
3) CV
4) certified transcripts of academic records
5) a project plan (3-5 pages, excluding reference list). If you are applying for both positions, it is possible, but not required, to submit two separate project plans. Please note, however, that the proposal for the specialized position needs to focus on the topic outlined above
6) letters of reference/recommendation (max 2 letters) or a list of references (max 2) who can be contacted
7) writing samples (1-3 samples)
8) an indication in the web-formula of whether you apply for 1) the general position, 2) the specialized position, or 3) both the general and the specialized position.
