The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se ) is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab is assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international centre for research in health- and environment sciences. SciLifeLab is also hosting a national COVID-19 research program and a new large research programme for Data-Driven Life Sciences (DDLS), with eleven partner organisations.
The successful candidate will be working at the SciLifeLab Data Centre, a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program. We have a national assignment and operate a range of services for life science data and e-infrastructure. We also work with issues about FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working at the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish life science research, and help to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab. You will work in a team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish data-driven life science.
Job description:
SciLifeLab Data Centre is looking for motivated and knowledgeable System developers to join our team. Within the new national data platform for SciLifeLab and the DDLS program, we build services for service units and research groups within life science. As a system developer, you are expected to participate in technical development of data services, with a focus on software engineering with methods for DevOps, to strengthen the research field. The work will include both new development, existing software components and commercial systems.
You will have the opportunity to work in agile development projects for, e.g.,
- Systems for research data management, for data from, for example, genomics, proteomics, imaging and chemical biology, in particular integration with our existing data portals for pandemic preparedness and data-driven life science
- Services for management of heath data in close collaboration with partners from health care or clinical research
- Systems and tools for metadata management, including information about sample preparation and biomaterial, experimental processing and production of raw data.
- Services for distributed compute- and storage resources linked to metadata for studies and samples
- Development of a new technical platform and support system for education/training and course materials according to Open science, in collaboration with SciLifeLab Training Hub
Design and testing of systems together with users and engineers will also be part of the work. You will work in a team of researchers, engineers, data stewards and system developers, in the middle of SciLifeLab's national research infrastructure. The work will include collaborations between SciLifeLab and national e-infrastructures, eg.Berzelius at the National Supercomputer Center in Linköping.
Qualifications:
This job requires a university degree in a relevant area. In addition is required:
- Documented experience in Python or other relevant programming languages
- Documented experience of version control systems, e.g. Git
- Documented experience from working with virtualization and/or container technologies, preferably Kubernetes and Docker
- Documented experience from working in Linux based environments
- Fluent in English
Meriting:
- Knowledge or interest in biomedical research and infrastructure.
- Experience of technologies for, e.g., data storage, metadata management, computational science or visualization
- Experience of system- and/or user administration for software systems or compute- and storage resources
- Experience from data protection technologies and information security
- Experience from working in agile projects where DevOps is an important part
- Ability to work both individually and in cooperation with personnel in widely different fields.
- Interest in education in the life sciences, as well as Open Science and sharing of educational materials
- Drive and initiative to support and develop data driven life science in Sweden.
