Offer Description

The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) is a non-profit research institute based in Barcelona dedicated to advancing the understanding of leukemia and related disorders, in collaboration with the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The IJC has laboratories in 5 clinical campuses: i) Hospital Clínic, ii) Hospital de Sant Pau and iii) Hospital Germans Trias Pujol iv) Hospital del Mar and v) Hospital Josep Trueta Girona. IJC serves as a collaborative center for basic researchers and physicians to work together on fundamental clinical and biological aspects of leukemia. The IJC offers an excellent work environment based on a multidisciplinary fusion of state-of-the-art ideas and facilities.

Leukemia and immuno-oncology research group, led by Dr Laura Belver, is looking for a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher.

This contract is part of the project: Development of cell-based therapies targeting DNA-reactive B cells in SLE, funded by Lupus Research Alliance (Award ID: 1143347).

Research Description

The standard of care for SLE has been traditionally based on the use of non-specific anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory/immunosuppressive agents. Although these therapies significantly improve disease symptoms, they are associated with a broad range of short- and long- term adverse effects and their efficacy remains suboptimal in controlling lupus-related flares. This speaks to the urgent need of developing new therapeutic interventions that target specific molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the disease and provide higher efficiency and safety for SLE treatment.

The goal of this project is to create innovative therapies based on chimeric T-cell receptors, specifically engineered to target pathogenic autoantibody-producing B cells in SLE while preserving non-autoreactive counterparts.

Main responsibilities

The candidate person will perform tasks for the development of an experimental therapeutics research program focused on SLE. These tasks will include the implementation of experimental methods in molecular biology and biochemistry, the execution of in vitro assays using both established cell lines and primary cells, the use of specialized analytical systems such as flow cytometry, and the design and execution of in vivo mouse experiments. The candidate will also be expected to assist in the training and mentoring of students and junior researchers.

Additional Information
Benefits

The Leukemia and Immuno-Oncology group is a young and vibrant research team compound of international and multidisciplinary scientists. Our work focuses on the study of different hematologic malignancies and autoimmune disorders by implementing our knowledge in different fields, including cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and experimental therapeutics. By combining basic and translational research, we provide a broad perspective on specific clinical challenges that range from the characterization of central molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the diseases that we study, to the application of that knowledge to the development of new therapeutic strategies for their treatment.

What we offer

  • Three years full-funded position (salary will be adjusted according to the experience of the candidate).
  • Be part of a young, collaborative, and international work environment with cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary teams of scientists, including experts in medicine, immunology, genomics, and bioinformatics.
  • An exciting and innovative research project.
  • The stimulating environment of the Barcelona metropolitan area.
  • Career Development Plan.
