Taphonomies project research assistant (Temporary)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: PartTime
Deadline: 22 Nov 2022

We are looking for a Research Assistant for the project "Taphonomies of intercultural knowledge: interactions between Europe and East Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries" of the ALTER research group of the University's Arts and Humanities Studies.

The intercultural interactions between East Asia and Europe in the modern and contemporary period have been studied from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines - particularly under current trends such as world history, global studies or world literature. This project focuses on agencies that remain unexplored and on the mechanisms of intercultural knowledge production that have caused their disappearance.

The project has two main objectives: (a) to delve into non-conventional forms of invisible agency that can be found in the interactions between East Asia (particularly China, Japan and their relationship with the Philippines) and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries; and (b) explain the processes by which these agencies have been silenced and rendered invisible in our contemporary understanding of intercultural interactions around the world. The project, in short, proposes a taphonomic approach to questions related to agency by banishing its remains and studying the processes by which they were disintegrated and annihilated in the discourses of intercultural interaction and knowledge.

We are looking for a person to carry out the functions of: search, digitization, management, cataloging and disclosure of Catalan, Spanish or Chinese documentation associated with the research project.
