Senior 5G Research Engineer

The Mobile and Wireless Internet (MWI) group at i2CAT is looking for a senior researcher to lead a Spanish R&D project focused on beyond 5G/6G network technologies to support future Extended Reality (XR) applications and metaverse services. More information on the MWI group can be found here: https://www.i2cat.net/research-topics/mobile-wireless-internet/ XR/Metaverse is one of the critical services envisioned for beyond 5G/6G networks. 3GPP has recognised this need and is developing network extensions to provide better support for XR services (e.g. 3GPP TS 26.118). The selected researcher will participate in two projects:

  • A national project called 6GOPENVERSO-NETWORK (TSI-063000-2021-2) that develops network enhancements for XR applications,
  • Horizon Europe SNS project 6G-XR, where the selected reseracher will act as work package leader.

Some of the XR network technologies that will be developed in these projects include:

  • Development of XR-edge technologies, allowing XR headsets and capture infrastructures to offload critical processing functions towards the network
  • XR bidirectional awareness, allowing the 3GPP network to recognise and appropriately prioritise at different layers the XR traffic
  • Development of a 5G-mmwave testbed supporting XR services
  • Protocol and algorithm design to enhance performance of XR services over mobile networks (e.g. scheduling)

As part of its work in the selected researcher will:

  • Lead and coordinate the technical work from i2CAT in the project
  • Lead other junior researchers in the group contributing to the aforementioned projects
  • Act as WP leader in the SNS 6G-XR project

As part of its role of senior researcher in the MWI group, the selected candidate is expected to:

  • Be the reference person in terms of XR networking
  • Lead preparation of future Horizon Europe proposals related to XR networking
  • Lead paper publications related to XR networking
  • Lead development of network prototypes

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established telework policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We ask that you attend the office two days per week, one to stay connected with the team and the other one to establish relations.

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency (we do not have opaque rooms). We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.
