The Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) invites applications for a Technical Research Support Staff position (TCP4 – Bachelor's degree or equivalent, MECES 2) within the research line "Pathology of Stranded Cetaceans."

The position is associated with the research project:

"Identification of the Main Threats to the Health and Conservation Status of Protected Marine Megafauna Species in the Canary Islands Demarcation"
Project reference: FB2025-SAFAMAR

The project is funded by the Biodiversity Foundation (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge – MITECO) and has an execution period until 30 September 2028.

The successful candidate will work at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA) of the ULPGC, providing scientific, technical and administrative support to the SAFAMAR project.

The project focuses on assessing the health status of threatened marine megafauna in the Canary Islands, particularly cetaceans, sea turtles and elasmobranchs, through the study of stranded or accidentally captured specimens. The research addresses anthropogenic threats and potential impacts associated with climate change.

Main Responsibilities

The selected candidate will contribute to the coordination, management and implementation of the activities assigned to IUSA-ULPGC within the SAFAMAR project, including:

• Supporting the design and definition of project tasks.
• Carrying out and coordinating scientific and technical activities.
• Preparing scientific and technical deliverables and project documentation.
• Supporting the economic justification and administrative management of the project.
• Coordinating relationships with public and private collaborating organisations and research groups.
• Supporting procurement and tendering procedures for goods, services and works.
• Managing and updating communication, dissemination and representation activities.
• Participating in regional, national and international meetings, committees, working groups, conferences and seminars.
• Preparing minutes, reports and other documentation arising from project activities. 

Scientific and Technical Activities

The position will also contribute to laboratory and research activities involving:

• Chemical, biochemical, histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses.
• Microbiological and molecular analyses for the diagnosis of infectious agents.
• Parasitological, immunohistochemical and molecular analyses.
• Toxicological analyses for the detection of emerging and persistent contaminants.
• Morphological and biochemical analyses to assess the body condition of stranded animals.
• Age estimation using histological and/or imaging techniques.
• Population genetic analyses to identify ecotypes and subpopulations.
• Multivariate statistical analysis of health and ecological data.
• Scientific outreach and dissemination activities based on the One Health approach.

Benefits

• Contract type: Permanent position linked to a research project.
• Job status: Full-time (37.5 hours per week).
• Working schedule: Monday to Friday, 08:00–15:30.
• Workplace: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA), ULPGC.
• Monthly gross salary:€1,425.12.
• Additional remuneration: Salary supplements may be considered depending on project implementation and budget availability.
• Starting date:16 September 2026.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates will be evaluated on a maximum score of 100 points according to the following criteria.

1. Research and/or Professional Experience – Maximum 50 points

Evaluation will consider:

• Professional experience in Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) activities in Animal Health: 5 points per year of employment, or proportional scoring by months worked.
• Experience in publicly funded competitive research projects in marine animal veterinary pathology: 3 points per year.
• Experience in publicly funded competitive research projects in veterinary pathology: 2 points per year.
• Experience in other publicly funded competitive research projects: 1 point per year.
• Publications in indexed journals related to marine animal veterinary pathology: 3 points per publication.
• Publications in veterinary pathology: 2 points per publication.
• Publications in veterinary sciences: 1 point per publication.
• Publications in other experimental sciences: 0.5 points per publication.
• International scientific communications in marine animal veterinary pathology: 2 points per communication.
• International scientific communications in veterinary pathology: 1 point per communication.
• Other scientific communications: 0.5 points per communication, up to a maximum of 5 points.

2. Academic and Complementary Training – Maximum 20 points

Evaluation will consider:

• Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Medicine (MECES 3): 10 points.
• Other Bachelor's degrees in Experimental Sciences (MECES 3): 8 points.
• PhD in Veterinary Sciences: 15 points.
• Other PhD in related Experimental Sciences: 10 points.
• Postgraduate Master's degree in Veterinary Sciences: 5 points per degree.
• Other postgraduate Master's degrees in related Experimental Sciences: 3 points per degree.
• National academic awards or distinctions: 2 points per item.
• Training or professional placements in international public or private R&D&I centres: 1 point per month, up to 10 points.
• Training or professional placements in national public or private R&D&I centres: 0.5 points per month, up to 5 points.

3. Other Merits – Maximum 10 points

4. Personal Interview – Maximum 20 points

The interview will only be conducted with candidates who obtain at least 55 points in sections 1–3.

• Ability to present and communicate results – maximum 4 points.
