This is a unique opportunity for a candidate with a strong background in data science and an interest in economics and finance to work with financial transaction microdata from one of Europe’s leading financial institutions.
Dr Stephen Hansen is seeking to hire a full-time research assistant (RA) to query and analyze financial transaction data based at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A (BBVA), one of the world’s largest banks with a strong presence in Spain, Turkey, and Latin America. The position will support an ongoing collaboration between Dr. Hansen and BBVA Research’s Big Data team that aims to use naturally occurring financial transaction data to construct novel economic measurements and to better understand the transmission of economic shocks. A recent example of this joint work is https://sekhansen.github.io/pdf_files/rsos_2021.pdf .
The RA work must be carried out within Spain. Dr. Hansen is based at Imperial College London but will also travel to Spain as appropriate during the project. He and his academic collaborators will maintain regular contact with the RA.
The position will involve handling large databases of financial transactions and extracting and organizing relevant information. The RA will also be involved in the statistical analysis of derived economic indicators and presenting them effectively.
The closing date for applications is 30 June 2022. Shortlisted candidates should be prepared to conduct a small assignment to be discussed in subsequent interviews, and to submit two references. The position will be for nine months in the first instance, with the possibility of further renewal. The formal employer will be the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), where Dr. Hansen is affiliated with the Data Science Center, but this implies no obligation to work at the Center. The terms and conditions of the contract will be in line with those for pre-doctoral RAs at BSE.
